Not to be too pro technocrat, but it is astounding how much this country depended on the selflessness of like a few hundred thousand highly educated public servants who, for peanuts, made sure our food and medicine and environment etc were safe. And in return these servants were demonized.

Thank you Teddy—your brilliance and bravery are models for us all. www.comicsands.com/autistic-boy...

Claiming that 10 Commandments in school rooms is about teaching our nation's history rather than indoctrinating Christianity is a prime example of secular-washing papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Most clarifying question in today’s Supreme Court argument in religious charter school case was whether a state that hired contractors to paint secular landscape murals on government buildings should be forced to allow someone to paint a religious mural instead. 1/x

Again the courts hold it up, but everything is uncertain.

VICTORY in Tennessee: The state legislature did NOT pass a harmful bill that would have deprived students of their right to a public K-12 education based on their immigration status. This win is a testament to the families & advocates in Tennessee who fought ferociously to defend #EducationForAll.

for alito especially, racism is fake, anti-LGBT bigotry is fake, and the only real discrimination is against conservative christians who can't make public school curriculum by decree

NEW: By a 4–3 vote, the Wisconsin Supreme Court upholds Gov. Tony Evers' creative "veto" transforming a two-year school funding increase into a 400-year funding increase. Evers crossed out words, numbers, and hyphens to rewrite the law—legally, it turns out. www.wicourts.gov/sc/opinion/D...

My latest in Slate looks at the growing legal threats to Plyer v. Doe—and what its potential fall portends for public education and beyond.

I don't think I've ever seen someone speak about children (in this case, specifically Autistic kids) with such disgust and such disdain.

Joining with TC colleagues to say, among other things, that elite universities need to see and hopefully act in solidarity with K-12 educators and school systems in this moment we are all under attack.

COMPARE: the results of fighting back to the results of not fighting back

“They were careless people…they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness…and let other people clean up the mess they had made…” -- F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby (April 10, 1925).

This is not parody. It is unwitting self-mockery, but it is real.

Ffs. These beliefs—apparently embraced by members of the Trump admin—are those of misogynists and misanthropes who treat sexism and callousness as credentials and points of pride.

It is undoubtedly true that the Administration is engaging in a shock & awe campaign through daily injustices to disable our feelings possibility & hope. But, in fact, this is backfiring. They are politicizing people, enraging them, and bringing us together in ways I didn’t think possible.

A quote from Simi Linton’s Claiming Disability: Knowledge and Identity that’s stayed with me: “Our educational institutions…are, not alone but preeminently, the shapers and guardians of cultural memory and hence of cultural meanings.”

I think folks on both the right and the left trying to retrofit a theory to Trump's actions really do miss the degree of not just thoughtlessness but outright resistance to thought that characterizes Trump and nearly everyone with whom he has chosen to surround himself.
