I like apples. I post photos. I dig birds. I write books. The next book is THE STAIRCASE IN THE WOODS, April 2025. Yes, I'm cringe. What do you want from me, I'm a 48-year-old dad and my brain is a mouse-eaten shoebox.

Hearing the same from a direct source. People in Americorps being told they're done. It's over. No notice.

Gilded Kitsch and AI Slop: Reactionary Aestheticism in the Age of Trump

A federal judge appointed by Donald Trump issued a sharp rebuke tonight of his administration’s sweeping spending cuts — and a defense of the judiciary’s obligation to ensure the executive branch follows the law. “Here, the government failed to do so.” storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

My “spidey-sense” is saying we should keep our eyes on this. www.reuters.com/world/us/top...

We've seen videos like this before, but usually when you see a tearful wife pleading with the kidnappers who have taken her husband, she's not talking to the U.S. president

No more CVEs assigned from the source? The downstream consequences of a pause will leave us drowning in bugs of many other names, & we won’t spontaneously sprout gills. We really don’t have time for this.

"Without the taxes the IRS collects, the United States would essentially have no funds for key services and no creditworthiness, and the nation would rapidly grind to a halt. Ensuring that everyone pays their fair share is also a key component of the social contract."

Judge Xinis in Tuesday eve order homes in on key issue: "Abrego Garcia appears to remain inexplicably detained in CECOT." She cites text in written agreement with El Salvador showing US control: That detainees are kept in CECOT “pending the United States’ decision on their long-term disposition.”

Judge Xinis is set to haul the government in front of her bench over the next two weeks and make them explain under oath what they're doing. I know the timeline seems awful given that Kilmar remains locked up. But this is not a case where she can just order him brought back tomorrow, given Bukele.

Adding that I wrote about this move for @thebulwark.bsky.social and pointed out how Florida has required every sheriff and state agency to join 287g task force agreements. (So every Florida county has two 287g agreements -- task force and jail/ WSO). www.thebulwark.com/p/sheriff-ic...

You love to see it

The guy who admitted it was a mistake gets fired for not lying in court.

I want to tell you why the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia should matter to you. The one power you cannot give the executive is the ability to imprison or expel anyone regardless of their legal rights. That is our key check against autocracy. And we are watching it disappear.

Oh I can't wait for you all read The Staircase in the Woods by @chuckwendig.bsky.social! Its out at the end of the month. Its SO GOOD. It might be Chuck Wendig's best book. I just loved it.

Things are bad and good news feels weird, but I got a nice little review in @theguardian.com for THE STAIRCASE IN THE WOODS, so, I'll take it? And feast on it like a mouse with a crumb of cheese. www.theguardian.com/books/2025/a...

Happy tax day, a day we celebrate by paying taxes to the hackers who have our home addresses

In fairness, Garcia *was* engaged in human trafficking, by Leavitt's boss, who kidnapped and trafficked him.

Once again, we institute BIRD PROTOCOL. Take a bird, leave a bird. Bird. (photo by me) (also reminder: when you post photos, use alt-text, please and thank you)

MAJOR SCOOP: The local detective who first accused Mr. Abrego Garcia of being a member of MS-31 was suspended from the police force and indicted merely WEEKS LATER for providing confidential information to a sex worker who he was paying in exchange for sexual acts.

Seems the 9th Eric Carter book, CULT CLASSIC has been out on audio for a year now and they're giving a 70% discount on it. So, if angry, violent necromancers with poor impulse control are your bag, maybe check it out. www.audiobooks.com/promotions/p...

took a few days off for my brain and one pretty alarming observation i have is just how easy it is to not hear about the bad stuff that is happening if you don't explicitly dip into specific information streams (not a new problem but feels orders of magnitude more siloed than even 2-3 years ago)

this is the most consistently pro-plague administration in memory

Not the greatest, but a template you can use for Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, Gilman. You can cut and paste from alt text.
