the chief and primary lesson of the saga that is about to unfold before us is that Labour are morons, which is also the chief lesson of literally everything that has ever happened in British politics

Not only fundamentally immoral in of itself but also makes a mockery of existing counter terrorism legislation and exposes how its prone to abuse. Great job Keith

Here's a big-picture geopolitical thread on Israel's war on Iran - its possibilities, impossibilities, dynamics, and delusions. My goal is to give you a full big-picture view in one place, which is why this is a long thread. If you prefer drip-fed updates, skip this thread.

One of my favourite recent pastimes is looking through Keir Starmer's old Guardian op-eds. Here's a great one, from 2003. (h/t @tom-clark.bsky.social) www.theguardian.com/politics/200...

Israel is calling for the assassination of a foreign leader for ordering the strike on an Israeli hospital. That would be bad news for most of the Israeli Cabinet and Armed Forces leadership if it were an international standard people actually supported.

I'm sorry but did Israel just like fire all their PR people in October 2023 or something

Quite frankly, I think "we've learned nothing from Iraq" is a completely incorrect conclusion on almost every level. Look around you. Speak to your friends. Support for Israel is at the public opinion level at an absolute nadir almost everywhere else. The dynamic is completely different

Some good news today!

Current discourse around current pop stars is giving me war flashbacks to cringeworthy 2013 discourse around Miley Cyrus. Just the same talking points over and over again. I guess i'm showing my age

I shed no tears for IRGC criminals like Hossein Salami, but direct war on Iran is an insane escalation (that will make Israel’s people less safe). There is no logic of self-defence left, just the logic of power (Netanyahu’s unpopular government’s survival) and war’s own dehumanising internal logic.

youtu.be/VB3bbt98rQ0?... I did a thing about #DoctorWho and stuff. You should go watch it.

Detaining an MEP is just stupid. This is what it looks like when a country is drunk on lack of accountability.

It ACTUALLY happened! We're ACTUALLY getting the Doctor Who Series 10 soundtrack! Holy shit! Also yeah we're in a hiatus if Murray Gold has time to do this.

This is so fucking cool. As this kind of technology develops we need to make sure it's available to everyone who wants it, of course.

Hearing conflicting accounts as to how bad the effect of the recent supreme court ruling will be. Regardless, solidarity to all the trans people in the UK worrying about this rn.

The level of injustice is just so extreme They had a hearing about what rights, what freedoms, what future trans people have... without a single trans person being involved, yet multiple with hate groups They decided we don't deserve equality. Then said "no one won"

I don't really wish to post politics on here but if the current government really thinks its mega majority was scored because we wanted a continuation of Tory policies undertaken by grown-ups, we'd have just voted Tory. Stop trying to appease the USA and govern in the interests of British people.

And this was not done three years ago why

One problem with the discourse around population and fertility rates is that the timeframe and speed of the changes significantly varies from country to country.

Me: What lovely British afternoon weather, time to have a drink outside! >Sun goes down >Temperature plummets ❄️

While it's true that sometimes the prosecution and conviction of a head of state/government candidate can be weaponised as an authoritarian, anti democratic measure, I don't think the alternative should be that they should have outright immunity from from prosecution #LePen

on this; something I find disturbing is this assumption that if enough people want something then they should be able to get it - was that belief always there? understand no one wants to come across as overly patrician but if 60% of people wanted a cat as president, would we let the cat stand?

Yet, if Le Pen had been found not guilty, her supporters would be shouting it from the rooftops, and commentators would be saying that being cleared had boosted her credibility. So is it win/win for the far right every time, or is that a projection of our fears of their invincibility?

I've always avoided the "Red Tory" stuff - it was all so superficial and patently false. Not anymore.

The best part of binge watching Severance is inadvertently tackling my social media addiction through my desire to avoid spoilers

Started watching Severance. Not a single Newton's Cradle as a perk. These innies are going to lose it

Labour really going out of its way to validate the 'red tory' slur eh?
