Creed (15): A beautiful binary. A director’s new vision while recalling the franchise's strengths. A glorious swirling boxing drama of cinematography, music, and cutting. Jordan and Stallone have incredible rapport while both shining solo. Emotionally evangelizing without any treacle. A Triumph. A

My Neighbor Totoro (88): Miyazaki’s painterly style and the triumphant score bolster this simple story dappled with grand fantasy and poignancy. Starts off shakily, but builds effortlessly as it goes from mood piece of childhood imagination to nostalgic pang in a moment. A-

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (45): A decade spanning tale of friendship, love, and patriotism told on the way the Archers could. The politics are prescient, the production is sterling, and the performances are immaculate. Kerr shows so much wily ease, and Walbrook is the film’s conscience. A-

Column: What classic movies can tell us about our current moment I write a little about 1940’s “The Great Dictator” (photo seen here) but mostly interested in the less famous 1942 film “To Be or Not To Be” starring Carole Lombard & Jack Benny. Both are comedies, which is all I can stomach right now

Princess Mononoke (99): Miyazaki never forgets that fairy tales should be mysterious, a bit bloody but never didactic. The savage beauty of the image and lovely score actually make for a calming yet compelling watch. The complicated motivations of the characters makes it true art. A-

Pride & Prejudice (05): Brimming with energy and empathy, Wright’s adaptation is a beguiling mix of Austen with more than a dollop of Brönte. Knightley’s Lizzie is precocious, prickly, and decent, but always Lizzie. Sutherland is her equal. Marianelli’s score surges with ardor and passion. A-

Rebel Ridge (24): Saulnier creates a precise and tough actioner with perfectly framed set pieces and a hero in the vein of a great western. But, he applies this story into the ever-prescient world of small town cops over exploiting their authority and those they’re protected to serve. Thrilling. A-
