The Lord of the Rings illustrations by Ukrainian artist Sergei Iukhimov. #TolkienTrewsday #TolkienTuesday #Tolkien

This week’s Tolkien Deep Dive is about a significant—but easily missed!—detail in the second chapter of The Lord of the Rings and its continued relevance to us today. #frodo #tolkien #lordoftherings manymeetings.substack.com/p/frodos-cho...

5 things I did this week, #silmarillion edition

Patagonia,Argentina

It all happened so fast! What happened in the USA reminds me of what Frodo, Sam, Merry & Pippin found when they returned to The Shire (#LOTR). The hobbits were browbeaten and following orders because they had only ever known peace. But with the right leadership they overcame their dictator. #Tolkien

Did you know you could join a worldwide organisation devoted to #Tolkien? And you get six copies of our magazine Amon Hen and our journal Mallorn! You can join the Tolkien Society from any country, with postal or online memberships, by signing up at www.tolkiensociety.org/join

Also LotR brings me and many other people a lot of joy, which is valuable in its own right and also necessary. Emma Goldman once said that any revolution without dancing isn't a revolution worth having.

Sometimes my academic specialty—Tolkien and post-Christian theology—seems totally impractical in the face of rising fascism. Other times, though, spending so much time with fantasy, the history of religion, hermeneutics, the emergence of (and backlash to) modernity - it all feels very of-the-moment.

The majority of county councils in Wales have now officially expressed their support for the devolution of responsibility for the Crown Estate to the Welsh Government ✍️Emily Price

What is a #Tolkien myth you can think of? Something that lives in the zeitgeist but isn’t from the text? #luinellë

People are always asking “what are some books that capture the feeling I get when I read The Lord of the Rings” so I made a list:

Hot take but clearly Haleth only became a unisex name because she was so badass people undescended from the Haladin thousands of years later named their sons after her in the hopes they would be strong. #tolkien #luinellë

“The revolution will not be televised” has become a prevalent saying, but I think too few people honestly understand that the second caveat has to be “it won’t be readable without paying a subscription fee.” Companies need to take articles about the government out from behind paywalls.

Defiance. I talked a lot about defiance in conjunction to LOTR today with a few friends. In the face of unjust laws we should all look to The Scouring of the Shire. We have 3 options: 1/4

Seeing IG accounts with names like “Silmarillion fans” and all they post is LotR content makes me want to make an account that solely posts arithmetic-based memes from The Nature of Middle-earth and call it “LotR movie fans.” #luinellë #tolkien

huh, i wonder what this is about www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Does anyone else think about how Minas Tirith has enough lampwrights—specialized potters or glass-blowers or metalsmiths—for them to have their own street? #tolkienomics #tolkien #luinellë

Gregory the Great says Satan tempted Christ, "cum posse [hunc] mortalia perpeti humanitatis videret," which a 19th century translation renders "when he saw that He might suffer all the mortal accidents of humanity." I just keep hearing "the thousand natural shocks/ That flesh is heir to."

I wished I had a better word than "idolator" though. Theologically it captures something centrally important in the Christian tradition: do not mistake the powers of this world for the One who loves it into being. But it's so often used as a pejorative for non-Christians. Any suggestions?

I call these Christofascists "idolators." They worship capital, white supremacy, patriarchy, power. Not God, and certainly not the Christ crucified by Empire. I have no pretensions to being morally innocent, but I believe Christians ought at least to strive *not to do those things*.

they are mostly targeting black employees so this is quite literally just a repeat of woodrow wilson’s segregationist purge of the federal government

SHE SAID WHAT SHE SAID

if I see one more post about how being a Hobbit is all about sitting around barefoot and eating potatoes I’m going to snap. it’s about toppling authoritarian regimes through self-sacrifice and love in action!!! get off your butt!!!! (you can bring the potatoes with you though)

This, highlighted, is telling.

Special guest announcement! Jay Johnstone will be joining us in-person at Westmoot 2025! Jay Johnstone is a British illustrator who works with traditional methods and techniques employed by medieval artists and artisans.

This might sound a little wack but I think a great form of #resistance is offering one’s time and talent for free. So much of our world is disappearing behind paywalls, and given the state of the world this will likely continue apace. Why not fight back by giving?

The worse things get, the more I come to appreciate the Book of Revelation. Not so much as a literal prediction of the end timess, more as a radically anti-imperialist text whose ethos can be summed up in the four letters "FAFO."

“Prince Imrahil” by Abe Papakhian. Do you suppose the knights described as accompanying Imrahil were simply well-appointed horse guards of his household? Or were they vassals in turn of the Prince of Dol Amroth, with subfiefs of their own? #tolkienomics #tolkien #luinellë #gondor

Looking for your next big adventure? We our hosting our annual event Westmoot in Kansas City on May 9-11. This magnificent event includes talks, activities, performances and more! You can book on our website to join in this fabulous #Tolkien weekend. www.tolkiensociety.org/events/westm...

For Black History Month, did you know that one of our foundational Tolkien scholars is a Black woman? Melanie Rawls wrote "The Feminine Principle in Tolkien" (1984), among THE seminal works on women and Tolkien. She's written on JRRT and Ursula Le Guin among others and is a fantasist herself.

I’ve been researching another aspect of the economy of #gondor: feudalism! It’s not just a social and military system, but an economic arrangement that was part of what made the kingdom great. #tolkienomics #tolkien #luinellë

Looking forward to the day when all Celtic languages have their own translations of Tolkien’s legendarium.

May we, like Fredegar Bolger, ‘decide what to do with the time that is given us’. May we find ‘deeds within our measure’ whenever life asks it of us and—more importantly—have the courage to act upon them. #tolkien #lordoftherings manymeetings.substack.com/p/the-courag...

Tolkien - prescient as always - wrote about migration and the challenges it causes and as was his way urged compassion. He really never left room for hatefulness, so if that’s what you’re seeing in his works it’s because you brought it with you.

‘There was trouble away in the South, and it seemed that the Men who had come up the Greenway were on the move, looking for lands where they could find some peace.’ The Fellowship of the Ring, ch. ‘At the Sign of the Prancing Pony’ - This passage is more relevant than ever. #tolkien #luinellë #estel

Where am I in Middle-Earth? #luinellë

Aaaaand while I'm already on it, let's talk about DEI and Tolkien. Because even if DEI gets a bad name from the Illiterati, Tolkien was a huge fan. And if it's good enough for the Professor, it's good enough for me.
