Has US just trumped UK in terms of imposing self inflicted trade barriers on itself? World beating…..something or other…..’people tell me they’ve never seen a finer set of tariffs’…..

Lewis Goodall is clear: “The post-Brexit settlement has rarely seemed more exposed: we have neither the security nor the power of being in a large trade bloc, nor a truly special relationship with the world’s remaining economic superpower and insufficient economic power to matter much on our own.”

Nigel Farage and his Brexit Party MEPs once voted against tougher EU measures to combat “highly dangerous” Russian disinformation—and people are talking about it again.

Very important point here: champagne in the Kremlin. Economies disrupted, trade disrupted, alliances disrupted, confidence undermined, uncertainty, chaotic unpredictability, desperation for some. All a gift to Putin. Champagne in the Kremlin.

Ah yes. Trust the guy who has driven six companies to Chapter 11 bankruptcy to run the world economy.

No, Britain did not get off lightly in the Trump tariffs. And no, it is not much of a vindication of Brexit. Or at the least seeing it is an economic dividend is to conveniently look away from the more substantial economic costs. New writing from me. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

It's got zero to do with negotiation or indeed with any sense of logic. The tariff rates are the product of minds which are functionally insane, doing fantasy mathematics at scale. We're all lost in a hall of mirrors pretending that a compass will help us find our way out.

I realise Starmer has to consider the UK's interests re tarrifs. However, that includes appreciating how breaking ranks and doing a side deal with Trump might affect our largest trading partner (the EU) and the future security landscape.

@thecricketer.com it seems very odd that Clare Connor & Jon Finch took it upon themselves to sack the Captain without consulting their incoming Coach. Another misstep from those reviewing their own homework? Surely the new Coach should have had a say?

“First, Britain put up severe obstacles to trade with its largest partner in the form of regulatory and customs checks. Now it faces sky-high tariffs with its second biggest partner.” Brexit: an endless moronathon that leaves us permanently weaker and worse off. liveapp.inews.co.uk/category/361...

Another Trump tariff lie and a telling one: no tariffs on Russia and Belarus because the US has “no significant trade with them”. In fact America’s trade balance with Russia is $3.5bn, more than other countries. Tariffs on Belarus should actually be 42% and 24% on Russia, according to Le Monde.

Just to be clear, the benefits of a UK trade deal with the US would be trivial compared to the benefits of removing trade barriers with our European allies.(Based on government figures.) Post Trump #tariffs, this will hold, because the UK exports much more to the EU than the US.

One of fascinating things about moving across from X to Bluesky is who is not here. I can't find Chis Mason or Laura Kuenssberg I can't find Keir Starmer (Badenoch has made it) Interesting given respective platforms. Other BBC, Sky & ITV journos made it over as has @uklabour.bsky.social Odd

yes why @bbcnewsnight.bsky.social @skynewsrss.bsky.social ?

@bethrigby.bsky.social @peston.bsky.social @rosatkins.bsky.social @samcoatessky.bsky.social

@bbcnewsnight.bsky.social @rosatkins.bsky.social @itvnews.bsky.social @itvnewspolitics.bsky.social @peston.bsky.social @bethrigby.bsky.social London Mum makes a great point. 4% hit to GDP £100bn pa & our MSM just refuses to inform the public about the damage. A catastrophic failure of journalism

Trump’s Tariffs impact on the UK. £30bn short term £74bn long term Our self-inflicted Brexit? £100bn just in lost trade every damn year. Trump’s tariffs still aren’t as costly to the UK as the barriers we put up ourselves with Brexit. If only there was something we could do? 🤔 #RejoinEU

🚨 NEW: UK must stand with allies against Trump's attempts to “divide and rule”, Lib Dems say @eddavey.libdems.org.uk says:

I am going to go out a limb now - I don’t think referees are very good at applying VAR properly!

Gotta love the French! 😎❤️✨

The hubris with which he talks about the national interest & growth whilst refusing to mention the damage of Brexit is nauseating. I could never vote for someone so dishonest with the public. He wouldn’t recognise the National Interest if it came wrapped & labelled.

While Canada and the EU stand up to Trump, Labour offers tax cuts to US billionaires. The UK is also understood to have made concessions on agriculture, with tariffs on imports of US beef, chicken and other meat to the UK to be lowered 🙄 www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

IF Keir Starmer's priorities WERE guided by the NATIONAL INTEREST he would be explaining HONESTLY the damage of Johnson's Brexit and explaining why he was taking steps to accelerate economic growth by rejoining the single market & customs union. Otherwise it is just a hollow toryesque catch phrase!

A call to Labour to Rejoin the EU. "It’s nine years since the UK voted to quit the European Union. It has proven to be a disaster, and a disaster made greater by the election of Donald Trump. The world is at a pivotal moment. Stark political reality faces us."

There's absolutely no evidence to support Starmer's claim. Overall immigration increases wages. Where there are negative impacts it tends to be on lowest paid 5%, overwhelmingly existing migrants. In terms of undocumented migrants there is no evidence of impact wages due to nature of employment. 1/

At every step Labour look to appease the unappeasable on the right & barely deserve the title Labour anymore. Whoever is yanking Starmer & Co to the right needs to be sacked immediately. It’s beyond grim.

Reform voters & the PM seemingly.

I don't want Starmer to do this shit. Blaming 'illegal migration' for low wages while letting big corporation - who've embraced the gig economy as the answer to their low wage prayers - off scott free is what the far right do. Weaponising immigration is what most defines the far right.

Tell all your Labour friends to vote @LibDems or Greens. Given the message that purple labour & blue labour are not for the likes of the decent majority!

Everyone, I present to you the worst politician in the world - someone who is more determined to be right in her own eyes rather than the voters' eyes. www.politics.co.uk/news/2025/04...
