Aretha Franklin was a singer and song writer who in 1987 became the first woman ever elected into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Known as the Queen of Soul, Franklin enjoyed a six decade career before passing away in 2018.

The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park was established in 2013. Located in Maryland & run by the National Park Service, the park is on nearly 500 acres and includes a monument to the fearless leader who was recently recognized as a one-star general in 2024.

The African Burial Ground National Monument is located in the corner of Broadway and Duane Street in Manhattan. It contains the remains of more than 400 Africans buried during the 17th and 18th centuries. Ran by the National Park Service, the site is open Tuesday - Saturday.

The Frederick Douglass home is located in Washington, D.C. in the Anacostia neighborhood. Established in 1988 and managed by the National Park Service, visitors can take a tour of the home three days a week.

The Booker T. Washington National Monument is located in Virginia and celebrates the life of the educator and author. Overseen by the National Parks Service, the park has several trails and a picnic area.

The African American Civil War Memorial is located in Washington, D.C. and is the only monument recognizing the contributions of African Americans during the Civil War. Managed by the National Parks Service, the memorial is part of the National Mall.

Visiting a friend in MS where we went on a house tour of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The docent of the house definitely said that Abraham Lincoln was the aggressor and… Jefferson Davis didn’t own any human beings. 🫣

One more film to recommend this black history month: Glory. Starring Denzel Washington and Matthew Broderick, Glory is a historical drama about the Massachusetts 54th, the all black regiment in the Civil War.
