One of the reasons why it is so important to highlight this historic site is because the MAAH still exists in the shadows of the Freedom Trail, which was developed after WWII to highlight a history that was intended to rally white Americans at the height of the Cold War. Please visit the MAAH.

@jamellebouie.net is absolutely right. The Trump administration's attempt to rewrite history by censoring it signals a return to a time when Confederate monuments and the Lost Cause narrative justified and reinforced a Jim Crow society.

The White House recently directed the termination of thousands of grants from federal agencies that serve the history field, including NEH, IMLS, and NPS. We are asking history orgs that received cancellation letters and emails to send us copies of these notices. Read more at tinyurl.com/479x3r2f.

I am sick to my stomach and just so sorry for these teachers. If this is how we treat new teachers, why will anyone choose to enter the field? southdakotasearchlight.com/2025/04/10/s...

As much as any working historian, @simpsonvos.bsky.social has helped to shape the field of Civil War history over the past twenty years through his editorial guidance. One of the high points of my career as a historian has been the opportunity to work with Mark on my last two book projects.

With talk of "patriotic history" & "celebrating" US founders--and the White House egregiously redirected NEH funding to his atrocious "Garden of Heroes"--I thought I'd give recommendations of solid scholarship that helps you understanding US framers & their world. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGqM...

#otd in 1865, Abraham Lincoln publicly endorsed extending the vote to Black menβ€”in what proved to be the last speech of his life. He spoke from a White House window to a crowd celebrating the fall of Richmond and Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. πŸ—ƒοΈ chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045...

It was never about controlling spending or paying down the federal debt. "[A]bout $17 million from the National Endowment for the Humanities and about $17 million from the National Endowment for the Arts would be directed to the Garden of Heroes." www.nytimes.com/2025/04/10/a...

What Republicans are essentially saying is that the history of white America is ideologically/theory neutral. Anything that hopes to add to or detract from this history is viewed as a threat to the status quo and driven purely by an ideological agenda. πŸ—ƒοΈ www.texastribune.org/2025/04/10/t...

"This Passover, as for thousands of years, Jews gathered around seder tables will recall the story of our ancestors’ enslavement in Egypt. The purpose of remembering, however, is a little unclear, and, in our time, hotly contested." πŸ—ƒοΈ slate.com/news-and-pol...

Can't wait to read this one. Congratulations @timgalsworthy.bsky.social.

On this day in 1865, Confederate general Robert E. Lee issued his Farewell Address to his troops. Here are a few thoughts. πŸ—ƒοΈ open.substack.com/pub/kevinmle...

I'm not sure Otis is very happy, but he's at least a good sport.

Hundreds of enslaved laborers, that were still present with Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, were freed when it finally surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. It is a reminder that enslaved labor was the "cornerstone" of the Confederate war effort. πŸ—ƒοΈ

I've always maintained that Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and the Army of the Potomac had something to do with Lee's decision to surrender his army #OTD in 1865 at Appomattox Court House.

Big day for Tar Heels and Civil War history buffs with todays new releases πŸ‘ uncpressblog.com/2025/04/08/n...

It's a reflection of how far off the cliff we have already gone that this is even being voiced from our White House. The seriousness of her tone and the conviction that she brings to these statements is truly terrifying.
