My latest: The mass firings at NOAA can feel abstract. Here's what was lost at one research center -- the birthplace of climate modeling. Fired staff became U.S. citizens to pursue these dream jobs, only to have their dreams upended.

🧵 Yesterday I shared my views on how disordered discourse has captured the US state and the risk of that happening elsewhere, but I don’t want to leave you hanging without proposing a solution.

*Three more* NorESM-centric positions (1 permanent, 2 fixed-term) available at MetNo (Oslo). Come and join our community modeling team! :D www.jobbnorge.no/en/available...

🚨 Now CCN-official 🚨 Trump issues stop-work-order to NASA chief scientist #KateCalvin, who is also co-chair of the IPCC's working group in charge of the next assessment on climate change mitigation. This is brutal, on so many levels. edition.cnn.com/2025/02/21/c...

A source involved in @ipcc.bsky.social told me it's "bizarre, sad, depressing" Biden admin pushed to have a big role in the next IPCC report. NASA Chief Scientist was co-chairing a working group. I'm told EU could take on some of the role but "it's looking really worrying" bsky.app/profile/aaro...

Our @newphyt.bsky.social paper with @ckoven.bsky.social and others used a dynamic vegetation model to understand how grass allometry and phenology influence annual grassland matter and energy exchange and their seasonality, as well wildfire dynamics: nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/....

We have a *permanent* position open at @ciceroclimate.bsky.social , working on calibration and general awesome-ification of the CLM-FATES model, across a fun set of projects www.finn.no/job/fulltime... Flexible wrt career stage and the balance of science/technical work. Tell all your friends!

Draft chapter outline for IPCC AR7 WGI is now public - *subject to approval* at the plenary, end of Feb What's new? Compared to AR6: -More concise -greater range of modeling approaches -chapters span Earth System domains -considers diverse physical scenarios /thread/ apps.ipcc.ch/eventmanager...

The meeting is hybrid, so join us online from anywhere for free! Tutorial for running emissions-driven CESM is in person only, and it would be great to see you in Boulder. We will also make all of the materials from the tutorial public.

Joined a fantastically interesting workshop on TCRE and ZEC last night If you have ideas on the assessment and definition of TCRE or ZEC (including on whether ZEC is even a useful/real concept) submit to this EGU session! 👇 1/2

@queenofpeat.bsky.social moderating a panel of early career scientists who are all leading new synthesis products via the Permafrost Carbon Network. Really exciting to see all of this amazing work happening!

A thing I love about my ebike commute to work at @berkeleylab.bsky.social is all the random stuff one notices but would miss in a car. This morning’s installment: clouds of insects hovering at the tips of every coast live oak tree crown on one of the hillsides.

First chanterelle of the season in Berkeley, just in time for Thanksgiving

Join us for an update, Q&A and discussion (Dec 13, 12:30 pm), on the implementation of the U.S. National Strategy to Advance an Integrated GHG Measurement, Monitoring and Information System (GHGMMIS) agu.confex.com/agu/agu24/me... #AGU2024

New paper on #CMIP7 emissions-driven design out today in GMD. Earth System Modeling has long relied on simulations driven by GHG concentrations. But this approach is outdated. ESMs need to resolve human activity and its consquences. gmd.copernicus.org/articles/17/...

The NOAA Climate & Global Change (C&GC) Postdoctoral Program is now accepting applications. Deadline is January 10, 2025. This is open to all climate and global change related disciplines, including social and interdisciplinary sciences. 🧪

Can I take a moment to note that planning, conducting and analyzing a totally new ESM MIP outside of the CMIP machine is a -lot- of work. Well done to my (nearly) indefatigable other half @benmsanderson.bsky.social & all who helped out with this. 👏👏👏

Really excited for this flat10MIP preprint to come out! In addition to @benmsanderson.bsky.social's points below, I want to add what I think is coolest about these experiments. /Thread/

Here is another #Bluesky starter pack with scientists who were involved in the @ipcc.bsky.social #AR6 reports (with a likely WGI bias). Please let me know if I missed you! go.bsky.app/Erpq9Sq @valmasdel.bsky.social @edhawkins.org @glenpeters.bsky.social @lisaschipper.bsky.social

LOTS of land modelers joined #bluesky in the last 24h. @climate-dude.bsky.social,@mlague.bsky.social @kaaze7.bsky.social @rebeccamayvarney.bsky.social @aargles.bsky.social @ryanpavlick.bsky.social @ladyfortran.bsky.social @samsrabin.bsky.social @tompugh.bsky.social @tquaife.bsky.social & many more!

I made a list (or 'starter pack') of Land Surface Modelers, because that's the kind of thing one does on #bluesky. Please tell your friends and also (v. important) TELL ME if you want to be added. We need more people here! go.bsky.app/Mw4tJ3t

2010 was the first year above 1.0C. 2014 was the last year below 1.0C 2024 is the first year above 1.5C...

Well at least I finally got around to actually deactivating my twitter profile. If I'm going to doomscroll, the least I can do is for it not to be a fascist scroll.

Land matters for climate! We show how things we don't know about land change surface climate (a lot!) using 36 plausible simulated versions of Earth. Led by Claire Zarakas and just published in Geophys. Res. Lett.: doi.org/10.1029/2024...

Yay for the guy whose signature is on my PhD diploma.
