Job opportunity at Kew 🌳

Okay, nerds, buckle in! It's time for some SCIENCE. Back in the late 1960s, a scientist got some government funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Atomic Energy Commission to look for interesting bacteria living in extreme environments. 1/x

I work in amazing place: UNC-Chapel Hill Biology. Our faculty of ~50 includes folks engaged in both basic science & pedagogical research. We have an opening for a new Teaching Assistant or Associate Professor to join us in July 2025-happy to answer questions RT unc.peopleadmin.com/postings/297...

So has *anyone* heard back about NSF Post-doctoral Research Fellowships in Biology? Mine is still listed as "pending". I'm trying to figure out if I haven't heard because I'm out of the running, or simply because the NSF is a hot mess right now.

There’s a google doc trying to keep track of funding/grad school admission/hiring freezes & status please share 🧪 docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Thanks to a loud public outcry and a relentless media campaign from outdoors influencers the Trump administration is reversing its plan to eliminate thousands of national parks jobs. Amazing work everyone. Keep speaking up, it matters!

It would be great if folks also spoke up about USFS, Fish and Wildlife, BLM etc. there’s lots of federal land management agencies that serve the public’s ability to safely recreate in the great outdoors!

Twitter/X got really quiet (and weird) so I finally moved over here...are my fellow ecology/plant eco-phys folks out here?? Give me a follow to bring back that lovely #scicomm community 🙏🌱🤓

The tide is turning, even in Florida.

So I'm headed to Namibia & South Africa next week and wow there are a lot of venomous snakes. 🐍

Oh man, I don’t even know how to accept good news anymore. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

This fascinating flowering tree from Madagascar has young leaves that unfurl like fern fronds! Pseudopteris decipiens was given its genus name "Pseudopteris" (i.e. "false fern") due to this uncanny resemblance. This exciting new introduction thriving in the Sunken Garden @fairchildgarden

We are excited to announce a new faculty position here in Cambridge, for researchers in computational and/or theoretical biology, based jointly in Genetics and Mathematics. Come and join us! Happy to answer questions about research, teaching and working here. www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/50414/

Trump Crash Plane Watch

You know that "Napoleon" quote Trump posted? It's credited to Napoleon right before he crowned himself emperor but it was made popular by white supremacists in 2011 by Anders Behring Breivik, the white supremacist terrorist who killed 77 people, many of them children, on an attack at a summer camp.

I've worn my "Immigrant" shirts in public since 1/20. Problem: I live on a farm in a big forest and rarely see people. So: Are you an immigrant who would wear such a shirt, or, if not an immigrant, would you wear the "Welcome" one? Your shirt, my ink, no charge but a promise to wear it. #charleston

I'm excited to see this come out. Been a line of research we have been pursuing for a long time. Worked with a great group of undergrads while completing the study!

Journalists, grow a spine. Yesterday there was an illegal mass firing of federal workers, not a "layoff". The fork offer was not a "buyout" but a deferred resignation preventing individuals from suing the federal government. Words have meaning, use them appropriately.

I think I remember a google sheet that was making the rounds last semester containing undergraduate research opportunities in ecology (and fields related to ecology). Anyone have the link?

Please Repost! Still so many ppl to connect with. Follow the #PlantEcophys community with this starter pack.

If you have a Google account, there's a handy way to provide feedback (little question mark at the top, feedback at the bottom of the menu). Would be a shame if they were inundated with messages about this and the error on their maps re: Gulf of Mexico. 🤷‍♀️

White Christofascism is formally US state religion now, in violation of the First Amendment, because the white nationalist broligarchy and their kakistocracy of lemmings want it. Next it'll be Praise Be as mandatory greeting.

Just in case we needed any more evidence that this was never about "government efficiency."

Science grant proposals are like science fiction with realism.

How did we as a society get to a place where for large branches of activity (academia, nonprofits) employees themselves are supposed to obtain the money necessary to perform their _bare minimum_ job obligations, and why did we decide that was okay?

New high-yielding and cold tolerant switchgrass breeding field in mid-winter at MSU.

Maybe I've missed it, but is anybody filing lawsuits about what's happening at NIH/NSF?? Given that much of what is happening violates an act of Congress, this seems like a no-brainer for a judge to step in and stop this, at least for the moment.

Well, f&@k….

JEDI awards provide input on a manuscript, short grant proposal, or job application to scientists facing unfair, systemic barriers to career progression. Next deadline March 10th - please share & apply! lifescienceeditors.org/apply/

Does anyone on bluesky have experience bear-proofing environmental data loggers (specifically PAR and soil moisture) without compromising functionality? Bears at our sites have extensively damaged seed and camera traps already, so hoping to get ahead of them this year.

I never taught about the importance of NIH/NSF in any of my classes before. Well, you can be sure that this week I am doing just that. So few students even realize how significant these agencies are to everyone, not just research scientists, and it is good to see their reactions to the pauses. 🧪

Hey can someone run down to the EEO office and grab me one of them “we investigated ourselves and found we did nothing wrong” forms? I’ve got an idea…

I can highly recommend spending a summer catching damselflies in Skåne! In fact I'm tempted to apply myself...
