So disappointed in this Labour government. I understand the need to increase defence spending but to take it from the international aid budget when Trump has decimated USAID, and when the Tories already decreased aid funding, with terrible consequences, is just awful. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Nice to have my career highlighted as part of this spotlight series by Durham University. www.durham.ac.uk/news-events/... @durhamearthsci.bsky.social @ihrr.bsky.social

Another very sad loss for New Zealand science/volcanology. Jim will be greatly missed. deaths.press.co.nz/nz/obituarie...

Poor Ned has been unwell. His left eye had the third eyelid coming across but also the pupil has a cloudy reflection. The vet thinks it might be a virus and has given him antibiotic eyedrops and eyedrops to mend the cornea. Hoping it’s nothing worse. No obvious injury. Any ideas? #Caturday

What a star! If only more people cared like Teddy does! I hope Hampshire County Council sorts out their recycling situation! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

#Caturday

We can think of more important things... Like actually dealing with plastic pollution and #microplastics 😡

The effects of volcanic unrest/seismic swarms can be devastating and exhausting for local communities. The constant stress of the shaking… and waiting to see if the next tremor will be ‘the big one’. www.bbc.com/news/article...

#USAID saves lives! Despicable. USAID staff will be put on leave starting on Friday www.bbc.com/news/article...

Santorini on alert as tremors rattle island www.bbc.com/news/article...

Chaos in disguise, dead cat strategy & destructive proposal all in one: #Trump's proposal for an alternative to @who.int It will undermine trust & cooperation at a time when we need to strengthen #WHO We prebunk the idea & call on countries to reject it. www.bmj.com/content/388/... @bmj.com

Taken in December, this is a plane flying over the Potomac river (which is behind the Lincoln Memorial, shown) into Ronald Reagan Airport. Those planes are ever present across the DC skyline. Thinking of all the families of those who have died.

A tiny glimmer of light amongst the endless gloom. I hope her actions make people think. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I highly recommend getting the flu jab. Getting flu is awful - high fever, bad cough, feeling exhausted for a few weeks. I've just had 'mild flu' because I had the flu jab. It's not been pleasant. I'm 10 days in and still have sore glands, mild cough, sinus pain but nothing like full blown flu.

Hard to overstate how catastrophic this is for global public health. The WHO has helped saved literally millions of lives, particularly those of children, from malnutrition, malaria, TB, HIV etc. Pure callous disregard for vulnerable humanity from Trump - as expected.

Some of you in the volcanology and disaster research fields will have already heard but we lost a dear colleague this weekend. David Johnston will be sorely missed. I’ve been lost for words so I’m glad to see people have written lovely tributes like this one www.profellow.com/announcement...

#Caturday mornings are so chilled! Actually this is their first one with us, but it’s the first of many!

Introducing our new floofy cuties! Already settled in and adored!

Journal of Air Transport Management. Literally the worst journal I've dealt with. 1 paper in review for + 7 months with 0 review invitations accepted and no updates from editors. 2nd paper rejected after 6 months in review, based on 1 highly flawed review. Complained but no response from editors.😠

🎄Season’s greetings from all of us in the Durham Department of Earth Sciences! 🎄

It’s foggy here! Merry Christmas & Chanukah to everyone who celebrates! 🎄🎄🎄🕎🕎🕎 ✨✨✨🎄🎄🎄

We frequently overlook the #airpollution problems caused by wood burning in rural villages, and the #climate harm too. To plug this gap, a team of scientists moved into a Slovenian village for winter. Here's what they found. My latest for @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Goodbye @agu.org poster hall. I won’t miss your vast, hot, stuffy, noisy, overwhelming, hard to get a cup of tea in, sore feet craziness! I will miss the feeling of pride seeing the rows of GeoHealth posters though! And bumping into volcanology friends! @agugeohealth.bsky.social @aguvgp.bsky.social

Had an excellent meeting with my wonderful colleague Ciro Ugarte, Director of Health Emergencies, and colleagues in the Emergency Operations Center of the Pan American Health Organization HQ (Washington DC) this morning. Great to rekindle our relationship and discuss future collaborations.

I turned off reposts on my Following feed on here, and now it’s a lot more interesting and relevant. Highly recommend!

This is the first time I’ve had this sort of rubbish on Bluesky. We all make our own decisions on personal risk and protection. We don’t need others doing it on our behalf or need to justify our decisions to others.

Fascinating keynote by Admiral Rachel Levine on health equity and climate change at #AGU24. Here’s an article about her. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Seeing the @agugeohealth.bsky.social Section grow from nothing to a vibrant community of transdisciplinary researchers and practitioners is incredible! In the photos: 1) the founding executive 2) the current and past presidents 3) the Section reception last night. We need a bigger room next year!

Poster time! So happy to have this forum to present the findings of the FACE-UP project! @agu.org @agugeohealth.bsky.social #AGU24

Proud to have been given the @agu.org GeoHealth Section award for 2024! Thank you! So wonderful to be part of this incredible geohealth community and journey! @agugeohealth.bsky.social

The @agu.org exhibit hall is truly a sensory overload. There’s even a pen full of puppies. No joke. I’m going to lie down in a quiet room now. My ears are ringing! #AGU24
