The main theme of yesterday's little macro walk was seeing Dagger flies (Empididae) either mating or feeding on St. Mark's flies (Bibio marci) - or doing both at the same time as it happens...

Finally achieved this post-Christmas goal! I loved the ending to this book. Anyone else around here read it? E. C. Large particularly good at endings, imo. Worth getting through all the very detailed middle bits for!

The lone long-lost MingKwai typewriter, invented by Lin Yutang in 1947, has resurfaced in a NY basement. How did it get there? Where might it go next? The journey of the groundbreaking invention embodies the search for modernity and Chinese identity. My latest: madeinchinajournal.com/2025/05/02/l...

Enjoyed seeing a Gymnosporangium rust fungus on the Juniper at Levin Down (a known site for this species). Fabulous views.

I found this wonderful rust, Puccinia longicornis, on bamboo today. It is named for the long horn on the teliospores. It strongly reminds me of Noo Noo. #FungiFriends #CityNatureChallenge

Entomophthora scatophagae 🪰 a new one for me! Scale image below 🤳 #fungifriends

So jealous of people who’s job is to work on little excel spreadsheets

Nice to see ARH Buller's book plate with his motto 'carpe fungum' - gather the fungi #FungiFriends #MycoBookClub

Lead an event with the Microscopical Society of SF today on using #Foldscopes in the field. Here is a Peziza #fungus we looked at using the 340x lens. Amazing what origami, a ball lens, and good engineering can do #microscopy #mycology #mushroom #DIYbio #biology #microscope #ascomycete #peziza

Hoary footman, Eilema caniola. Here you can see part of the hind leg of this moth from the subfamily of the Arctiinae. These striking spurs are visible even with the naked eye.
