It's 5:30 and it's not dark out yet. There's lots of garbage. The light is coming in though, too.

Nate Silver has to believe that Nate Silver and people like Nate Silver are geniuses who deserve everything they got because otherwise he’s just one of a couple hundred guys who did some interesting stuff with baseball statistics and then claimed he was a data genius so could cover all fields.

This is a shamefully racist movement that should be resisted by every person of good will. @brian-goldstone.bsky.social’s forthcoming book is incredible and it’s honestly the archive’s loss (and the nation’s). www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/a...

I was set to launch my book at the Carter Library next month. This week, we were told all events now need approval from the National Archives. The next day, my event was forced to relocate. A book about the working homeless. A book about civil rights. Apparently these topics are now off limits.

Anyone who thinks they are on the right side of this and is nitpicking whether or not something is "really banned" should read this.

Hey students: if you are angry at how your higher ed institution is handling things, let me tell you: You have far more power than you know. (1/x)

The attacks on DEI are a pretext for a much more radical agenda of reversing the gains of the civil rights movement, an objective the Trump administration is pursuing with zeal. A Great Resegregation. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

This is a very important article. Educators and administrators can learn a great deal from this. But also, the philosophy informing this is that we are stronger when we stand together.

The Trump regime's segregationist agenda is clear. I argue that having a Black man as president of white America enraged a portion of this country so much, that they decided to destroy any pipeline to Black advancement in academia, government, & workplaces. karenattiah.substack.com/p/trumps-seg...

In case you live in a red state and feel like your voice doesn't matter--it does. Keep the pressure on.

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

A nice thread:

Hey: If you made it through the week, and you tried to do some things to help other people — large or small — where you could, and you need to hear it, I’m here to tell you thank you. Get some rest. Figure out today, then figure out tomorrow.

That is a real quote. Jfc

CSPAN Caller from West Virginia: I’m a diabetic and I’m on Medicare. When Biden was in there, my insulin was $6 for a 28 day supply. I just went to CVS, it went back up to $80…

So grateful for work like this. While it hasn't been surprising to see so many academic leaders fold it has been disheartening. What is the point of everything we are studying if we can't even use it to fight fascism?

She's brave to say it.

Extremely fascist things happening. While everyone sits there obediently.

For all that I experience/observe fuckshit every time I go outside, there's also a fair amount of simple kindness. We don't HAVE to make any of this harder for each other. That's a choice.

Hi! Disability scholar here. IQ is a deeply racist and classist metric weaponized by eugenicists and used to claim the innate superiority of the white ruling class. Stop listening to ppl who crow about IQ. Intelligence means nothing without compassion, humbleness, and owning one’s mistakes.

My latest in @thenation.com:

I want to say again to academics who are interested in public writing. Look locally. Sure national outlets are good and I do that too, but this kind of visibility in your community can have a real impact.

Do not panic. Organize.

On the Left(s), we constantly have to beg and borrow. You spend countless hours to raise a fraction of what rightwing organizers raise in a quarter of the time. It really hinders what can be done. Hardly anyone wants to have honest conversations about money and organizing.

okay, it’s time for me to finally weigh in: it’s probably a bad sign that guys are just doing sieg heils in public again

I feel like noting that my Dad is an older white guy made it seem like I was deradicalizing him here and thankfully that's not what I mean. I mean, talk to your neighbors, your grocers, your bartenders, your friends, your PTO folks with curiosity and care about how to respond to what's happening.

Ok, I'm doing a version of this thread for 🧪 who are new to political conditions where info security is a safety issue: 1. Don't make public lists of people who are engaging in acts of resistance 2. Be weary of calls to advertise acts of subversion 3. Don't live post resistance meetings

I finally had a chance to sit down this morning & 1. order more paper 2. set up a form for folks to donate to the press & receive a poster/digital file We’re asking for a $35 dollar donation for posters—we will make up to 200 $5 for a high-quality digital version Here’s the form—& please share!

I explained to my Dad, a 70 year old white dude state retiree, why we're not going to Target anymore and why we got a membership at Costco and he said "ok. Let me know next time you're going. I'll cancel my Target order." Talk to people in real life.

So incredibly heartened by my colleagues who are fighting like hell for a world where people have access to the arts and humanities, not because it serves STEM, but because this is about nourishing our humanity

1. Meg is absolutely right. 2. Silver is, as per always, loud and wrong. And a classist, ableist, racist, and eugenicist. The statistical construct of intelligence, or "g," and the "intelligence quotient" was invented in... 1904. By a white British psychologist.

Teachers teach. We need a leaderful movement, and there are leaders all around us.

It really grinds my gears the entire “wait could Elon be bad?” discourse exists amid multiple discrimination suits one of which featured his factory consciously and intentionally invoking a plantation as its model of work.

Meta could have solely funded the ENTIRE WORLD'S 2022 CLIMATE FINANCE GOAL instead of this

Just met the Dept chair in my field from a university I just applied to while at coffee with a friend in galaxy print workout leggings and my "I'm the teacher fox news warned you about" hoodie. Feeling pretty good about our exchange And kind of wishing she had some say over the job I applied for lol

Please read and share. But especially share with folks that might not realize how critical Section 504 is to so many people. I tried to write a simple clear explanation at the break. I hope it reaches some people who aren't already on our side. Gift link: www.startribune.com/why-are-repu...

The US Education Department has lifted a pause on disability-related civil rights investigations but not cases of race, gender discrimination. // Have a related tip? Contact: ⁦‪⁦Jennifer Smith Richards at ProPublica‬⁩ www.propublica.org/article/depa...

I know we all know this but Carter sold his peanut farm. John Kerry sold his stake in his cookie stand at Fanueil Hall and he wasn't even elected. The President sure AF isnt supposed to acquire media companies.
