Lovely sketches John and a nice sunny day!

Some field sketches before I add the colour of the two Red-necked Grebes at Broadsands #Torbay Surf Scoter still here too but fairly distant- at least the sea is flat today!

Man Sands #SouthDevon has a good variety of mining bees @devonshirenature.bsky.social yesterday I found several Cliff Mining Bees visiting the banks to the north end of the beach. Quite a bulky little bee with a rich rusty thorax otherwise shiny black.

From Berry Head to Man Sands #Devon #Torbay today on a lovely spring morning: Singing Firecrests, Black Redstart, Wheatears, plenty of Cirl Buntings but highlights for me were both Common and Wall Lizards!

Some coloured sketches of the #Torbay 1st w drake Surf Scoter - at last it came in close enough for a good look. Unfortunately it was disturbed by a fishing boat and headed back out to the usual distant feeding area!

The 1st w drake Surf Scoter in #Torbay came in a little closer today with the female Common Scoter.

I am giving a talk tomorrow Wednesday 12 March 2025 on Swifts, Swallows and Martins in Devon for Sustainable Harbourne Valley 6.30 for a 7pm start at Harbertonford Village Hall, Devon TQ9 7TY - all welcome.

The spring issue of The Dartmoor Magazine is out now and features an article I have written and illustrated about spawning frogs.

Have a cheerful migrant European Robin. Watercolour and graphite.

Some great tips from Ken @lesserspotnet.bsky.social here about finding Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers at this time of year ⬇️

A rare bit of good news on UK wild birds (cirl bunting), via a parliamentary written question answered yesterday. @MarkAvery

Broadsands #Torbay on sea: 1 drake 1st w Surf Scoter, 1 Common Scoter, 1 Red-necked Grebe, 5 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Great Northern Diver. In the car park 6 Reed Buntings & 5 Cirl Buntings.

The Stuart Line Cruise on the Exe Estuary was a good start to the @naturetrek.bsky.social Best of South Devon by land and sea tour. Avocets, Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, Grey and Common Seals, and the North American Long-billed Dowitcher! L-B Dowitcher pictured with a Greenshank.

Spent some time with this Jackdaw with a distinct and symmetrical white lower collar at Salcombe S Devon yesterday 30/01/25. I’ve seen a few over the years but only in the winter - genuine Eastern race Jackdaw or just variation in local population??

I’ve spent 10 years of my life studying the breeding behaviour of Anthus Trivalis. The amazing artwork of @clennonvalley.bsky.social kindly providing the reference for birding Tattooist Tess from Divine Ink Totnes to execute this. Thank you both 💙 #UKbirding

I've just posted my guided birding/wildlife cruises for the spring and summer 2025 departing from Brixham and Kingswear. The last two years have been fantastic for birds and wildlife on both Dart & Start/Lyme Bay cruises -details here: mikelangman.co.uk/guided-cruis...

Over the past few months I've been working with Keith Offord and Steve Docker on a new fold out laminate chart: WildID Raptors of Britain and Ireland. Its just been published by the Field Studies Council see below: www.field-studies-council.org/.../public.....

Last day in Costa Rica - a cracking Bare-throated Tiger Heron close to the hotel and an American Croc still just off the beach a good 7-8 footer - luckily mostly fish eaters!lots of Black Iguanas but nice to see a good sized Green Iguana on the beach. streak-backed Orioles the Common Oriole here

Tried to photograph the Greater Fishing bats again tonight in Guanacaste, Costa Rica without much luck see pic..! But while torching the hotel beach and sea for the bats we found a good 6-7ft American Croc patrolling just off shore. I don’t think I’ll share the info with guests..

A flash of red on a Trogon that disappeared into the forest by Hotel yesterday wasn’t enough to confirm the species. Today, Tanya found it again in same area - and it was the hoped for lovely looking Elegant Trogon only found in this part of Costa Rica, also a Black-headed Trogon again.

Wow - by accident while looking for Coati’s on our Hotel beach in Costa Rica came across some bunting Greater Fishing Bats!!

Lovely boat trip with Palo Verde boats in Costa Rica. A private 8am start with guide and boatman. lesser White-lined bats, American Croc, Jabiru Stork and best of all Scarlet Macaw.

A night walk then a breakfast walk with Alison at ‘Tapir’s Home’ forest in Bijagua , Costa Rica was brilliant. Strawberry Poison Dart, Red-eyed tree, Glass and Ghost Frogs among many more, Two-toed sloths (all sleeping), and an Eyelash Pitviper, plus lots of bird species.

Fantastic trip up into the hill forests, within 10 minutes of sitting on our bungalow veranda, we clocked up 7 Toucans of 3 species.. Keel-billed, Chestnut- mandibled and Collared Aracari! Pictures here..

Holiday in Costa Rica going well, brilliant birdlife but best a snorkel trip, Sailfish chasing a shoal of smaller fish, Pacific green turtle, 6+ White-tipped Reef sharks. Spotted Eagle, Devil and String rays plus a yellow-bellied sea snake. Franklin’s only gull seen. White-cheeked Capuchins are fun!

New view point bench with Green Space Design near Wembury #Devon for @nationaltrust.bsky.social . My artwork etched in to the bench back, making a tactile image, which is then sprayed black - the black will, in time fade, but the etched image will remain.
