It costs a lot of money to put something like this on. Costs you wouldn't even expect until you're like "oh, yeah it costs money to rent a sound system," or "it costs *what* to rent portable toilets?!"

🚨 WANT TO HELP US STAND UP FOR SCIENCE? 🚨 Here's a little update on where we're currently at with the planning process! Is your state red or grey & you want to see an event happen? Fill out our volunteer form or share with a friend! airtable.com/app4h5wUssMG... #standupforscience2025

I'm a scientist because 52 years ago the National Science Foundation supported me, as a high school student, to do real research at a university summer science program. The destruction of US science by Trump and the Republicans today will weaken the country for decades.

Some folks have asked, given recent news, “how do I show my friends/family the impact of NSF?” We have some easy Fact Sheets for you! Here’s a brief thread about this website: new.nsf.gov/about/fact-s... which hosts a ton of useful one-pagers.

Check out this thread with Fact Sheets and interactive tools to learn about NSF’s impact across the US, in your state, and at universities in your community!

1/8. This week I had a few different conversations with scholars who, in the face of the attacks on science and institutions of learning in the U.S., are wondering what to do. One suggestion I have is: keep doing your work. It matters in and of itself. Why do I say that? A few reasons.

"Just since Donald Trump’s election, Musk’s personal net worth has grown by far more than the entire annual budget of U.S.A.I.D., which in any case accounts for less than 1 percent of the federal budget."

www.nytimes.com/2025/02/03/o... Over the next 30 years, if insurance prices are unhindered, they will, on average, leap another 29 percent, according to First Street. Rates in Miami could quadruple.

Looking very much forward to the upcoming symposium on past knowledge and future directions in climate and environmental physics, and celebrating the huge scientific contributions of Fortunat Joos, Markus Leuenberger anf Thomas Stocker

My friend and former colleague Linda Mearns passed away this week. She leaves a long legacy including serving on all 8 previous IPCC reports! For more on her career achievements in climate see ncar.ucar.edu/who-we-are/s...

Linda pioneered the field of regional climate modeling, led the National Academies review of the US National Climate Assessment, and inspired hundreds of us to more rigorous science in support of climate services. She will be sorely missed. 💔

Very sad news: Linda Mearns passed away last night. A huge loss to her many friends and colleagues, and a tremendous loss to science. She research and insights improved the lives of millions. Her intelligence, humor, and obsession with uncertainty will always be remembered.

New research shows more than 1.5 million people die each year from air pollution caused by wildfires: www.thelancet.com/journals/lan... This supports my thesis that fossil fuels & climate change are the leading preventable cause of death worldwide. @lshtm.bsky.social @gchalliance.bsky.social

On the heels of the incredible southern U.S. snow event, here's a pair of new papers from Cornell undergrad(!) Haoyu "Richard" Zhuang (now grad student at UW) on a new machine learning-based precipitation typing algorithm. Methods: tinyurl.com/y3rsphvt Application to CESM2-LE: tinyurl.com/ykr8w4yr

Welcome to Bluesky @earthsciencewomen.bsky.social - glad to see you here!

It's no exaggeration to say today brought a truly historical weather event to the Gulf Coast - lots of places all the way down to the water got over 6-8 inches of snow, shattering records going as far back as 1895 in some places. Let's review what caused this historic event 🧵

Amazing, thanks Doug! Make sure to appreciate the folks at BBC, which is where I first saw this idea. Specifically the ingenious @erwanrivault.bsky.social. bsky.app/profile/erwa... I just had to make my own so I can print a high resolution poster for my office and update it every year... :)
