I’m somehow on a Heritage Foundation mailing list (😂) and they sent a survey to see what we think of DOGE. Who wants to offer some m-fing feedback?!? secured.heritage.org/the-heritage... Please share with a friend or a thousand :)

Day 44 / 80 #dezoomcamp and started learning about batch processing and how streaming is different (which will be module 6). In my day-to-day job I use batch processing jobs for daily and hourly data.

Day 43 / 80 #dezoomcamp and starting module 5 (week 6!!!) on batch processing using ⚡️spark. I finished setting up my gitbook notes for the chapter and I am excited to dive in this week.

A silent timelapse of fireworks for Fur Rondy in Anchorage last night. The smoke is like firework ghosts as it drifts away with a firework shape. Also interesting to me, the smoke near the ground where the fireworks are shot off is drifting to the left. The tide was outgoing with little sea ice.

Day 42 / 80 #dezoomcamp and still reviewing my homework for #dbt. I think at this point, I need to use my time wisely and just submit it as is. My guess is I have some incorrect, because I couldn't prove them. Time to move onto module-5 batch.

Day 41 / 80 #dezoomcamp and I made a weekly overview post on linkedin. This homework has definitely been the most difficult so far, because while I understand #dbt and can follow the videos, the wording and information about using percentile_cont is not clear. www.linkedin.com/posts/kaylaf...

Day 40 / 80 of #dezoomcamp and we are half way through the course! I am still working on the #dbt homework and reviewing #percentile_cont. We will see how much I can get through this weekend!

The AMS is temporarily opening its career services to all who need them, regardless of membership status, and offering dues waivers and meeting registration fee reductions for those impacted by job loss due to changes in the government. Read more: bit.ly/4gRiHAk

Day 39 / 80 of #dezoomcamp and I am on the struggle bus for this homework. I am not finding the information through our videos so it is a lot of additional work that I may not have time for :/ we will see.

Day 38 / 80 of #dezoomcamp and successfully created my first #dbt model! I unfortunately used the wrong dataset, but, thanks to Ronald Cheung I am now using their #python script that is adding the needed data to my gcp bucket now!

In Juneau, 500-plus Alaskans packed the plaza outside the State Capitol before marching down Main Street, chanting slogans that included “Protect our democracy!” and “United we stand!”

Could Anchorage have a Feb with no measurable precipitation? The latest guidance indicates it is a distinct possibility. Only 1950 had a Feb with no measurable precipitation here - and there was at least 13" of snow depth all that month. We've been at Trace depth all month. @alaskawx.bsky.social

Day 36 / 80 of #dezoomcamp and started setting up #dbt which you can find here www.getdbt.com.

My emotions through the day since Jan 20 😴☕️😭😨🤬🙂😢😤🤔🫡🍻😴

Blog #dezoomcamp about the workshop week and #dlt. tinker0425.github.io/data-enginee...

Day 34/80 of #dezoomcamp and continued working with #dlt data load tool, which is an open source python library that makes data loading easy! Check it out here - github.com/dlt-hub

BTW, if you work in the weather/climate/disaster/emergency management space and are/were a federal employee who has been fired in recent hours/days, there are multiple journalists interested in speaking to you (and will be watching replies on this thread).

Day 33/80 of #dezoomcamp and started working on my #dlt homework. I was successful in creating my pipeline with dlt which pulls data from an API and loads it to #duckdb in this case. I am hoping to make modifications to load into #bigquery as well.

Now imagine if those NWS offices have to close and no one is there to provide life saving Flash Flood Warnings.

Putting together an Intro SQL course for our learners and I'm having flashbacks to the terrible database course I had in my Master's program. It took me a long time to understand database normalization, and when it's good to go down to a Normal Form, and not. #datascience intro-sql-fh.netlify.app

Day 32/80 of #dezoomcamp and made some headway with the #dlt workshop! So what is the difference between dlt and dbt besides one letter? dlt is good for data ingestion (at the start of your pipeline), while dbt is good for data transformation and modeling, usually at the end!

Day 31 / 80 of the #dezoomcamp course and jumping into the live workshop on data ingestion from APIs to warehouses and data lakes. I really like the learning layout of the workshop which includes notebooks and google colab!

Sunset and moon rise. We might not have much snow, but our temperatures have been favorable for sea ice. This was the incoming full moon tide this evening, which creates an eddy near downtown. The moon rises in the NE sky and sets in the NW sky today, like the sun does in summer.

Day 30 / 80 of the #dezoomcamp course. How has it been a month of work already! I wrote a new port about #BigQuery. I've really enjoyed this module. tinker0425.github.io/data-enginee...

Just completed my #bigquery homework for the #dezoomcamp course. I really enjoyed module 3 - learning more about BigQuery, partitioning and clustering, and machine learning. Excited to enter the workshop week!

Day 29 / 80 of the #dezoomcamp course and starting our workshop week which is ingestion with dlt! We had a youtube live session and students (me!) will work on the workshop homework this week.

USAID doesn’t just support overseas work. UCAR COMET, who are hosting my sabbatical, get a big portion of their funding from USAID. This funding employs US people to develop training geoscience materials, free for anyone, incl. in the US, to use. Defunding USAID hurts the US, too. www.comet.ucar.edu

Day 27 / 80 of the #dezoomcamp course and completed module-3 a bit early. This was a smooth week and we learned about BigQuery, partitioning and clustering. No 🐛 errors this week!

So pretty 🥰 - a result of our foggy morning 😶‍🌫️

If, for whatever reason, you need to grab some daily station data from one of our databases, then do I have something for you: github.com/jjrennie/xma... Click on the binder button on the bottom to launch a notebook and go download and save (I mean...play with) some data!

The DOGE investigation into NOAA/NWS computer systems seems to be limited to DEI activities, although it seems reasonable that climate change research may also be targeted. This article is good, and the headline is a bit misleading, BUT... www.cnn.com/2025/02/05/w... 1/9

I interrupt your doomscrolling to bring even more doom. January 2025 was the warmest January on record globally - breaking the January record set just last year.

Made several phone calls to my Congressman and Senators this morning over *waves hands wildly*. Ran into several full voicemail boxes (had to try multiple offices), one semi-rude staffer, and one very kind staffer, but I did what I could to make my voice heard today. Rinse, repeat.

Has anyone else gotten a similar memo about this? Just trying to find sources… #noaa #climate #nws #ncei

Excited for this to arrive next week!

Hey #100Devs friends! The FULL #Python playlist is now live on YouTube at this link - youtube.com/playlist?lis... As always, my channel is ad-free! A couple of videos are still processing, so if they look blurry, just check back tomorrow! Thanks again to @dr-chuck.bsky.social for this lovely course.

The #dezoomcamp course world-wide learning community has been so awesome. The slack channel is busy with questions and communications daily. Being able to 'teach' others, significantly helps with the learning process. Here is a snippet of who has been looking at my gitbook notes, so cool to see 🌏.

Really nice to see how many oyster restoration projects there are out there. This public radio story also features the "Black in Marine Science" group.
