I draw freshspectrum comics. It's basically a webcomic for data people (evaluation, research, public health, non-profit, academic). See all my comics (and other blog posts) at https://freshspectrum.com

This one comes from a request but I think a lot of people will be able to relate (unfortunately). #evaluation #webcomic Comic Link: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/could-...

This is not really a joke. I've looked a lot of reports of the last couple of years. You can really find the qualitative section by flipping to the pages without pictures. #evaluation #visualization #dataviz #webcomic Cartoon link: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/qualit...

Really digging into the archive with this one. I originally drew it back in September of 2012. It was number three in a series of cartoons about how to not really evaluate. #evaluation #dataviz #piechart #webcomic Cartoon link: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/how-aw...

Todays' #webcomic was inspired by a conversation I had while getting coffee this morning. #evaluation

I really don't like the environmental impact, the plagiarism, and the threat to humanity. But I appreciate the auto-transcription, summary creator, and brainstorm partner. How are you feeling about AI these days? #evaluation #ai #webcomics Cartoon Link: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/i-thou...

I kind of like picturing ChatGPT as a lazy intern. One that gets their assignments done, but doesn't exactly give it their all. #evaluation #webcomic comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/too-bo...

You have to admit, uniforms would make it way easier to differentiate #evaluation from #research. Comic link: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/evalua...

I've been co-working since 2016. The people I would see everyday were a mix of aspiring business owners, students, people in-between full time jobs, and the semi-retired. It can be hard to tell the difference sometimes. #evaluation #webcomic Comic Link: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/unempl...

Life can be pretty complicated and messy, but sometimes it's nice to just focus on the little things. #evaluation #webcomic Cartoon link: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/system...

Do you know people who have spent years doing #evaluation work but still feel uncomfortable calling themselves evaluators? Comic link: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/i-eval...

Was thinking about #evaluation as storytelling this morning. It led to this #webcomic. I think a lot of evaluation reports would be more effective if they were written like illustrated children's books. Cartoon Source: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/evalua...

"Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained..." #evaluation Cartoon Source: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/marie-...

Drew this in early March. Since then, I've been adding this comic to the first slide for most of my presentations. How do you start your conversations these days? #evaluation #webcomics Just added to the archive. Cartoon link: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/how-ar...

Personally I find #data to be way more interesting when it defies expectations. How about you? #evaluation #webcomic Continuing to backfill my cartoon archive, drew this one in early March. Here's the cartoon archive link: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/eviden...

Trying to spruce up your #data Dashboard. Sure you "could" add more interesting data. Or... Source: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/the-co... #evaluation

"Its focus on incorporating the use of systematically collected data to inform organizational decisions challenges the tendency towards "belief preservation," in which people make evidence subservient to belief rather than the other way around". -Susan Jenkins Cartoon link: lnkd.in/eeF5tvni

Formative plus time equals summative. Note: You can do a formative evaluation after a program ends, but it's not as funny to think about. Cartoon link: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/format... #evaluation #webcomic

I was thinking about what it would take to convince a MAGA person that perhaps Trump's way isn't going to be good for anyone. That led me to this comic. comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/all-pa...

In today's blog post I share my top 5 Logic Model & Theory of Change comics. Did I miss any of your favorites? #evaluation freshspectrum.com/logic-model/

I see it. I have lived it. 83 years ago, the U.S. government turned upon a group of its own citizens and residents and sent them to internment camps without due process. I was there among them. American fascism is back. It is here. It is now.

At one point in my career I was working for a state funded organization. Every time a new budget was prepared, they were at risk. It's hard to be open and honest in your #evaluation reporting when you know what could happen if the data looks bad. comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/lookin...

My LinkedIn followers really enjoy when I share #evaluation & #data related #webcomics but not so much #political cartoons. I wonder if they work better here. Inspired by @thenation.com Kaveh Akbar From this article: lnkd.in/enhFhxGr Cartoon link: comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/they-a...

Now that I’m here, it’s time to start sharing some of my #webcomics Here is one of my favorites from the last couple of weeks. Created this for all my friends and colleagues in #research #evaluation etc. who lost their gov jobs. comics.freshspectrum.com/comic/every-...

This is such a bad article about sprawl in the Times. For instance, this statement is insanely misleading -- there is absolutely no radius out from Los Angeles where it's denser than NYC. The LA 'metro area' is more dense just because of how we define metro areas… www.nytimes.com/2025/04/10/m...

My first bluesky post is for all the #evaluation people out there who enjoy a good theory of change comic.
