I think @escrimshaw.bsky.social has some good ideas here. Mendicino Musings And 5 Ideas For Carney open.substack.com/pub/scrimsha...

I think this is a mistake. Too much baggage. Even if it's on an interim basis only.

“Pierre Poilievre has spent his time as party leader insulting Canadians’ intelligence with rage-bait and misinformation. The Conservatives chose the path of hate and division, taking cues from the Trump playbook. It’s too late to pretend they give a shit about national unity.”

Wow. This is a powerful collection of photos.

This may be the biggest free speech crisis in living memory. The president now bragging about detaining a lawful permanent resident and smearing him as 'pro Hamas', no outlining any specific crimes he is accused of or charged with. This is what a fascist takeover looks like.

A few thoughts re: Carney in a wee thread: Some pundits like @acoyne.bsky.social lament Carney's choice of language in his speech; referring to "Americans" instead of "Trump", using harsh language to describe Poilievre, etc. I think it's just what the country wants and needs. 1/n

Singh will be the reason the NDP get massacred in the upcoming election. Many (like me) had high hopes for him when he first became leader; those hopes quickly dissipated. Whoever told him constant shitposting about the Libs and repeating PP's talking points was a good idea should be fired.

I see they’re sticking with the “We don’t know the difference between transgenic and transgender and neither should you” idiocy.

This thread.

I'm glad sick people have a new option. But I'm horrified by what this means for pigs. If I needed a life-saving transplant, I don't think I would accept it at the price of the death of an innocent animal. But if my child needed one? That's where my morals falter... Can't we clone organs already?

I hope he can do both. But part of me doesn't want a "trade truce" with Trump; I think what I really want to annihilate the asshole in a trade war and completely cut ties with the US. Yes, I know this would hurt Canada in the short term. But it would make us stronger long term.

Trump claims he is imposing 250% tariffs on CDN dairy. Lol. CDN dairy isn't competing in the US. We supply a domestic market. So go for it. I have fought for dairy farmers my whole career. Check out this photo of a much younger me with Jack Layton +John Vanthof defending CDN dairy from US dumping.

Columnists are being censored everywhere. It's odd because being opinionated isn't a sideline of the job, it's the job itself. Feature and culture writers are mostly gone, AI is going to write and edit. It happened slowly, then suddenly.

This is a challenge, and it *will* become difficult for Canadians. We don't want an escalating trade war. But we also can't sit back and let Trump bully and abuse us. I would not want to be a Canadian political leader right now.

Extension to a Toronto library. The city is generally obsessed with quantities of green space, but here they’re building on a park instead of the enormous parking lot.

It's too bad they didn't "deport" this guy, or throw him in the ocean, or whatever. Asshole supports Trump and then wonders why everything goes to shit. He deserves any trouble he gets.

Starship down, X down, US government down, Elon down.

Ford started the electricity tariff charge today. Raising an estimated $300,000 to $400,000 per day, the "tariff response charge" will be paid by utilities in New York, Michigan & Minnesota importing power from generators of electricity in Ontario. www.thestar.com/politics/pro... #onpoli

'The addressing of the trans issue is going to be vital for Democrats. They openly acknowledge that the Trump advertisement that ended “Kamala Harris is for they/them, Donald Trump is for you” did massive damage to her 2024 campaign.' www.thetimes.com/comment/colu...

Efficiency and stuff.

Carney ripping Poilievre a new one in his speech. 🔥

Carney: “In America healthcare is big business in Canada. It is a right.”

“…until Americans show us respect. “ Carney nails it with this line.

Musk told the Polish FM, a long-standing conservative ally of the US, "be quiet small man". What I find so fascinating about Trump, Vance and Musk's verbal abuse of Ukrainians & Polish officials etc, is: can you imagine them speaking like this to a Russian or Chinese official?

Wow. Carney with 86% of the vote on the first ballot. Wow.

Chretien’s speech was one for the history books. 🔥🔥🔥

Chrétien shaming Trump over his treatment of Zelenskyy is fire and I’m here for it.

Volkswagen is the latest carmaker to announce the return of physical buttons. We’re making progress.

"If we were to see immune damage manifesting at a population level, it would look like what we’re seeing today: big waves of common illnesses. Unusual spikes of uncommon illnesses. Course reversal for previously declining and eliminated illnesses. An unexplained, global wave of sickness."

Musk, on that other place, wants us to believe he challenged Putin to physical combat. 😜😜😜

"Give us your minerals in exchange for prior aide" is not good faith

@profanity.accountant enlighten me.

That’s not “misuse.” That’s fraud.

I'm sure we can find some middle ground between the original grandiose renderings and this new unassuming warehouse entrance right?

Nice from the New Yorker

I used to love The Bay, and shopped there frequently. In the past few years, I've had increasingly frustrating experiences, both in person and online. It's unfortunate. We will have no more department stores (Walmart doesn't count).

No limit to how stupid this can get

A conservative French news magazine brightening up the Paris news stands … hard to overstate the damage Trump is doing to his and USA’s reputation among allies (sic)

I’ve worked in a lot of European nations and cities, and I’ve always had a very strong sense that Canadians and Europeans share a lot of the same values and ways of thinking. We always seem…related. I for one welcome this moment to create much stronger ties with our European friends and allies.

I think this is 100%performative. I don't believe that Trump will do anything to inflict harm on Russia.

Well well well, someone should update the answers to the Canadian citizenship test to reflect the current reality. "Canada takes little advantage from its relationship with the US" is not the false answer anymore. "The two countries have strong ties and share similar values" is.

Just one more.
