Strong stance + demand for OSU leadership meaningful action: AAUP-OSU Commitment to International Scholars "The faculty members of AAUP-Ohio State stand unconditionally with OSU international students and scholars, core members of our Buckeye community." www.ohiostateaaup.org/uploads/1/3/...

“The administration is not anti-woke; it is woke with right-wing characteristics.” This is like arguing that segregation is just desegregation with right-wing characteristics, since they both involve government regulation of the racial composition of institutions.

Here goes people, this is not a drill -- come on Big Ten mutual defense pact team!

Hmmmmm...

Repugnant.

Cuts to the National Endowment for the Humanities will affect the way we celebrate America’s 250th Last week we did a few posts on how Trump's cuts to the National Endowment for the Humanities affected local humanities efforts. Get up to speed here, here and here. The cuts will also affect how…

Here we go. The blue print is there. MIT just stepped up. Now it is time for other top private universities and we really need to see some guts from the top big public universities as well. We're looking at you!

Senior registration opened today for this course, and in minutes, more than 100 people. It’s full! But we’re doubling the size—so more can come. I’m mentioning this because first thing in the morning, I see students who want to learn history! Lots of them!

Pleasantly surprised and proud of Harvard U!

Think of the College Football Trophy as a metaphor for America under the Trump-Vance Regime

Your turn big public universities! A lot of us are now looking at you Ohio State, Michigan, Texas & Texas A&M, Arizona State, Virginia, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan State, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Penn State, and on and on and on... www.harvard.edu/research-fun...

"The university will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights. Neither Harvard nor any other private university can allow itself to be taken over by the federal government. Accordingly, Harvard will not accept the government’s terms as an agreement in principle."

It isn't much yet but it is a start, and it matters: Harvard is now fighting back against federal overreach into a private university's internal processes, weaponization of title VI of the CRA of 1964, beginnings of a play book to push back now emerging www.thecrimson.com/article/2025...

When economics get dicey, I always wonder what @nelsonhist.bsky.social thinks. So I asked him to write for #AHAPerspectives about tariffs and financial panics. 🗃️

On top of all the big injustices there's things like this, DOGE cuts, making our cities less healthy, green, and happy places...

How many lifetimes' worth of work is being destroyed by all this? And to what end?? www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

Trump prefers his “Garden of Heroes” over National History Day and other humanities initiatives It looks like the money that Donald Trump cut from humanities programs, including National History Day, will help fund his "National Garden of American Heroes." Here is Jennifer Schuessler at The New…

Even more to the point, Treasuries usually rally even when the United States is the source of the downturn - see also: the financial crisis. That they’re not now is really bad

The evisceration of the NEH will halt efforts to preserve history and support local culture everywhere, but will be especially devastating in small towns and rural areas. A very well written piece and a must read: slate.com/news-and-pol...

National History Day is a national treasure. This should be easy and utterly nonpartisan. It is such an amazing way to get young people interesting in history, of all kinds.

I, for one, do not want to go back to the iron lung era.

Congratulations to Cameron Givens, what a fantastic dissertation! #OhioState 🗃️

Compelling papers at today's Ohio State Military Frontiers Conference--rethinking credibility, theorizing intermediate state, the Balkans & air power, Russian military ops, strategic arms treaties, African American soldiers and noncombatant roles in WWI, Soviet women warriors & gender norms in WWII

It is striking to me in studying the role of ideas & ideologies in past foreign policy & politics that we live in an age where there is such an acute failure of imagination (including innovative ideas, articulation of principles, conviction) across virtually the whole landscape of "leadership" ...

I guarantee the pilots and other operators involved in those missions are still thinking about the Signal chat giving away the timing and locations.

International students make us all better.

I'm deeply saddened that the best current advice to international undergraduate + graduate students is to not travel (& lay low). So loathsome that this is what the US & higher education by extension have become. Yet still, I'm one of the many in higher ed trying to be there for those in our orbit.

Amazing in this moment that well-resourced & staffed institutions are faltering, obeying in advance, trying (& failing) to work behind the scenes, while many within those same institutions, working with parallel orgs are stepping up -- here I'm thinking of the AAUP www.thecrimson.com/article/2025...

It isn't just the response to the policies, or the rhetoric, it is the policies and it is the chaos, reflected through the tragic but reasonable fear of traveling across US borders--visa being rejected and cancelled, people being taken and deported, etc.

Check out the decline in Danish travelers to the US!

Please get off Substack, a thread

Exciting new scholarship, discussion, and more. Come on out @OhioState @mershoncenter.bsky.social to the 2025 Military Frontiers Conference April 12, 2025 mershoncenter.osu.edu/events/2025-...
