I'm seeing a lot more "Yes, boycott us, make us hurt" the last couple of days than before, so maybe some USians are taking responsibility now.

“A Moscow-based disinformation network named “Pravda” … is …deliberately infiltrating the retrieved data of artificial intelligence chatbots, publishing false claims and propaganda for the purpose of affecting the responses of AI models on topics in the news rather than by targeting human readers”

So I'm a GenXer who grew up in the 70s and 80s with the constant threat of nuclear war. As a teenager I attended peace protests and anti-nuclear protests. I'm a little dismayed that I'm now at the place where I'm thinking "so what would it take to make a little dirty bomb." I hate this.

This feels like the sort of front page published during wartime.

If you're wondering about the vibe in Canada right now, I just got served this ad for a brewhouse that is just a portrait of the White House being burned down. No text, just a bigass picture of the White House burning and a link directly to their menu lolol

Easy to lose this in the noise of the day, but the prime minister of Canada just said the US president, leader of the global hegemon, wants to soften us up economically so he can annex us. That is one of the most remarkable statements, and realities, in our history.

Having a real hard time concentrating this morning...

This is genuinely all there is to it. Somebody over dinner told him about the 1890s and he got the idea that government could be funded by duties rather than income tax. He wouldn’t listen to those who’d tell him otherwise — ie anyone who knows anything—and found excuses to do it

🆕 New poll from Angus Reid Institute: Half of Canadians (51%) believe their government should approach the U.S. as a threat to national interests (38%) or an enemy (13%). Those views have skyrocketed from November (13% threat, 2% enemy)

Teams and Outlook are down at work, and I can't access Sharepoint, so I guess that means I really do need to work on that article.

So I'm doing a thing! It's amazing to me what writing one article in @theconversationca.bsky.social in Feb. 2022 has led to. (And I'm just a biblical scholar, not an expert in Christian Nationalism, but here we are - public scholarship is needed in many areas, and sometimes we just have to step up.)

Study for America Greg Curnoe 1989-1990

A public opinion poll published this week found that 85% of Canadian respondents plan to replace U.S. products with Canadian products when they shop and nearly half of respondents have cancelled or are delaying travel to the U.S. angusreid.org/shopping-shi...

"I" or "This reviewer" in the book review I'm writing?

I really wish Americans would stop treating the continued existence of Canada as the sort of thing they can do amusing thought experiments about.

Or: at least if you are going to speculate about the benefits of Canada being annexed, speculate about the potential for a decades-long guerilla insurgency.

They have no intention of giving us voting rights. Stop sane washing this nonsense, please.

An aspect to the tariff issue most people probably haven't thought of... The United States is not self-sufficient when it comes to toilet paper production. www.theglobeandmail.com/business/art... (Paywall)

The absolute stupidity on display here ... and a reminder that no matter what we do, it will never be enough. So standing firm is the only option.

"History repeats itself — only this time, it’s the United States instead of Germany. Lithium instead of grain." Former Ukrainian foreign minister @dmytrokuleba.bsky.social on the uncomfortable echoes of Donald Trump's demand that Kyiv provide the U.S. with rare earths in exchange for aid...

It’s a protection racket. It’s also the same extortion scheme the US has said it’s going to run on Canada: give us your minerals, or else. Forewarned is forearmed.

If you've ever used the Polity data, read this from Monty Marshall. tl;dr Polity is coding recent US events as an executive self-coup and an adverse regime change.
