In summer 2020, Trump wanted to invoke the Insurrection Act to deploy thousands of active duty troops into the streets of Washington DC to engage civilian protesters (“just shoot them”, he said). But chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen Mark Milley refused to go along.

Here’s what is going on. When you start firing the military’s top lawyers, that means you are getting ready to order the military to do unlawful things. Trump replaces those JAGs with men who will justify any future unlawful and unethical actions that he wants the military to do.

Donald Trump’s firing of military leaders — four-star General Brown and four-star Admiral Franchetti — along with top legal officers is a betrayal of legions of first rate service members who dedicate their lives to our nation’s defense. This is a growing national security risk.
