LOLOLOL not a chance 😂 My job title is “phonetician” and as such, I’m qualified to inform you that there is precious little phonetic overlap between “racist” and “Trump”. (🎁 link) www.nytimes.com/2025/02/25/t...

The University of Alaska's Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program has (seemingly) scrubbed most instances of "Alaska Native" on its website. This coincides with the UA Board of Regents voting to get rid of DEI-related language. (Left image is Wayback machine from Jan. 15)

Today one of the regular route drivers, who I always say "hi" and "have a good day" to, dapped me and said, "hey good to see you my friend." In all the hate and chaos, small acts of kindness spread hapiness and make the world a better place #🐝kind

When @propublica.org first published data and reporting on the tens of thousands of Native American human remains and artifacts held by museums and universities, compliance with the nation’s 30-year old repatriation law shot up. Today, we update the data to show where thise institutions stand now.

Last year I published an article with Fahimah Ali called "Multimodal Languaging in a Signing Community in the Bay Islands of Honduras" about ways in which deaf-blind people in a small community use language. So here's a thread to get me started on here. muse.jhu.edu/article/928057

🚨 🚨 Last call for abstracts: Usage-based Approaches to Phonology welcomes papers using diverse methods to explore the emergence of phonological patterns from language use. Plenary by Joan Bybee (U of New Mexico). Come hang with us at U. of Oregon, July 12 & 13. sites.google.com/view/usage-b... 🐦🐦

🐦🐦 🚨 Come spend a month in lovely Oregon this summer, while learning cool linguistics stuff at the #LSAInstitute2025. The theme this year is "Language in Use" (my fav topic). I'm co-teaching an intro course on the linguistics of signed languages with @ryanlepic.bsky.social. Love to see you there!

Jeffries: hey the GOP controls the government, absolutely nothing i can do, gonna work on my personal book tour Sanders: brb i am going to personally barnstorm strategic GOP house districts and try to peel off 2 votes so we can block Trump's cuts to Medicaid www.commondreams.org/news/bernie-...

Happy to get this month's issue of @wired.com in the mail today. Kudos on their cover layout. Really captures the ethos. Articles have a great mix of well-researched investigative reporting, healthy skepticism, and a sprinkle of snark.

This is what obeying in advance looks like. The NSF fires 10% of its total staff in a move that went beyond what was requested by the current regime. The NSF is the flagship of US basic research infrastructure. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨🔋 www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

Made dinner tonight with a dash of outrage!! Thanks @cocchino.bsky.social 😍😘🙌 #lovepenzeys

Welcome Dr. Heidi Harley as LSA's new President! A Professor at the University of Arizona, Dr. Harley is an expert in syntax, morphology, and semantics. She’s also contributed to documenting Hiaki, a Uto-Aztecan language. Let’s show @heidiharley.bsky.social a warm welcome.

This paper is an incredible rant about racist educational ideologies and about adults who assume that their own behavior has nothing to do with how children talk to them

✨New paper✨ Linguistic evaluations of LLMs often implicitly assume that language is generated by symbolic rules. In a new position paper, @adelegoldberg.bsky.social, @kmahowald.bsky.social and I argue that languages are not Lego sets, and evaluations should reflect this! arxiv.org/pdf/2502.13195

Quite an exchange here between Judge Reyes and DOJ attorney on how "pronoun usage" affects military readiness.

My paper with @ajdinkin.bsky.social on the low-back merger in New Orleans is out in Journal of English Linguistics! The tl;dr is that - LOT/THOUGHT are merging in NOLA & not just because of retreat from marked Yat features like raised THOUGHT. Check it out 👉 journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1...

The Indigenous People of North America have decided to go back to calling the Gulf of Mexico, “Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl”. It is what the Nahuatl People originally called it as it is the domain of the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue, who is assoc w/water bodies, including the Gulf of Mexico.

@rpchaves.bsky.social and I are planning a special issue of Languages on a topic that’s near and dear to my heart. Please send us an abstract if you are interested in contributing a paper to this issue on gradience in syntax and semantics. linguistlist.org/issues/35/24...

It takes about 30 seconds of looking to see that Ted Cruz's list of $2 billion in "woke grants" that "promoted neo-Marxist perspectives or DEI tenets" is fraudulent bullshit. Here is the most expensive grant on the list.

Happy SuperbOwl Day to those who celebrate. I present to you the superb burrowing owl, one of my favorites. The photo is from the Houston Zoo, many years ago, in my former life.

Next up for #SuperbOwlSunday is a Barred Owl. Note that they have black eyes rather than the usual yellow eyes of most owls. #birds #owls

Last night I dreamt of literal nazis marching in the streets of US cities. The fact that the American subconscious is contemplating this possibility seems far removed from the heroic WWII nationalism we grew up with and yet it is in part USian nationalism that has lead us down this path 😞

Happy 65th birthday to astronaut legend Peggy Whitson! She is the American with the most days in space at 675, was the 1st woman to command the ISS and NASA's 1st woman Chief Astronaut, and is scheduled to go back into space on Axiom 4 this year! #WomenInSTEM @roguenasa.bsky.social #BookSky 🔭🚀

I used to buy a Wired magazine whenever I flew because they had fun, informative science & tech articles. Last week, I subscribed to @wired.com because they've impressed me with their coverage of the political dumpsterfire that is US politics. If you can afford it, support good journalism!

Interpretation for the non-scientists: When faculty get NIH grants, the University gets some extra cash to make sure the research is supported. NIH just cut that $$ by a LOT. That means Unis are less likely to support research. Most research in the US is done at Unis, so... it's bad 🧪

Looking forward to this next Monday!

Job! Come work with me in Bergen! Associate Professor in Intercultural Communication. Deadline March 20. www.jobbnorge.no/en/available...

Bison should be allowed to roam free and cattle should be restricted to private land. All abandoned barbed wire should be removed from public land. The money today being wasted on public lands grazing should go into building wildlife overpasses and installing wildlife safe guide fencing.

Here’s a story with some numbers. The proposed cuts are unfathomable: a 60% reduction to NSF would be the end of American science as we know it.

I'm sad to share that a wonderful human and linguist Ian Maddieson passed away this week. Ian spent the better part of the last two decades in the Linguistics Dept. at the University of New Mexico where he was revered by many and loved by all. #linguistics

Gonna read more on this, but calling all #deafsky. This bill definitely needs to be defeated. Anyone know if folks at ISD are aware?

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

Science has always been political. To assume otherwise is either willful or blissful ignorance. There are no systems without analyses of power, and politics is about power.
