Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729–1781) was a German writer, philosopher, and dramatist who became a seminal figure in the Enlightenment. He is often hailed as the first truly modern dramaturg and a champion of intellectual and religious freedom. He is known as Germany’s Aristotle. #theatre #theatresky

Holy shit guys…I had both my screenplays make quarterfinals for a table read at Cannes.

@doctorshelleysella.bsky.social will release a book about her career and experiences as a doctor who performed abortions later in pregnancy. Here's a look at her book. #abortion #abortioncare #reproductiverights reprorights.substack.com/p/doctor-pen...

Konrad Ekhof (1720–1778) was a seminal German actor and theater director, often hailed as the “father of German acting” for his pivotal role in transforming German theater during the 18th century. He supported a naturalistic style of acting, focusing on internal development. #theatre #theatrrsky

Johann Christoph Gottsched (1700–1766) was a German writer, literary critic, and dramatist who reformed German theater in the 18th century. He was a major advocate for the Enlightenment ideals of reason, clarity, and order. Gottsched worked closely with Carolina Neuber. #theatre #theatresky

Carolina Neuber (1697–1760) was a pioneering German actress and theater director, instrumental in elevating the status of German theater. She moved away from the crude improvisational style of traveling troupes to more disciplined performances of literary quality. #theatre #theatresky

This has been reported elsewhere, but I provided some additional context that helps people understand how the federal courts have handled these abortion trafficking bills. #abortion #abortionrights #montana reprorights.substack.com/p/montana-le...

Michel Baron (1653–1729) was a French actor and playwright, considered one of the greatest tragedians of his time. He was a protégé of Molière and later became a leading performer in the plays of Racine and Corneille. His acting style was known for its naturalism and elegance. #theatre #theatresky

It’s interesting. Within Democratic and DC politics, I’m considered a young whipped snapper who’s mature for his age insofar as political sensibility. Conversely in Hollywood, I’m considered a late-bloomer. I don’t place so much emphasis on age. You can be gifted and sexy at any age. Man or woman.

There’s a reason Michael Jordan became the greatest basketball player ever. When others were watching TV, he worked on his game. He sacrificed pleasures to achieve great things. He meticulously studied great players and emulated them until he developed his own style and vision. Put in the work.

If you think about it though, does anyone remember the forgotten scribblers criticizing Moliere or Shakespeare? No. They are as obscure now as they were then.

Moliere didn’t sit at the cool kid’s table. The tastemakers and influential people governing literary circles conspired to defeat and marginalize him. He was the greatest writer of his time. Not treated that way during his life. #theatre #theatresky

This is partly why I think younger men and women should empower older men not driven by envy, but by hope for what they could become if a leader has the courage to pull through for them. You deserve better leaders. So support new ones to take their place so we break the cycle of envy.

When I run into those envious dudes, I look at them and think, why didn't you read hundreds of books on feminism? Why didn't you train yourself to write screenplays and plays and then study theatre history? I don't care that you spent your time watching the boob tube. You have to put in the work.

Younger guys will see this. If you're a talented actor, writer, or musician, you'll run into envious older guys who are indignant that you're getting opportunities before them. That happens whenever someone breaks through. Happened to Moliere. Happened to Shakespeare. Happens to everyone.

Another thing with the late-bloomer stuff is that it implies that the person's lack of success was due to their immaturity. That's not always the case. Sometimes, envious leaders thwart ambitious and talented younger men. That's always happened. A man can only go as far as his leader permits.

My aspiration wasn’t to be the next Paul Newman. It was to be the next Upton Sinclair. And I developed the skill to be great reporter and worked with Pulitzer winners. It’s just that journalism died.

I disagree that someone should be considered a late-bloomer or had stunted development because they didn’t get to a Hollywood awards show. Some of us didn’t set that as a goal. We had other career aspirations. Maybe other people expected it. But our dreams were different.

This is a better way of approaching staged readings. If a cast of actors is already rehearsing, then perhaps we can convene them to read a local playwright’s work on a daily basis to give feedback. They did that during Moliere’s time. That’s the only way to develop playwrights I think. #theatre

I’ll tell you what ChatGPT is good for. It completely replaces sparknotes. I’m reading Othello aloud right now as part of speech therapy. And all you have to do is ask it what Act 1, scene 1 is about. Then you understand what you’re reading.

It’s additionally important to be cognizant as a wealthy and famous person to not say things like money doesn’t make you happy. There’s widespread poverty now and many domestic calls come because of arguments about money. It’s tone deaf.

It would help if famous people served their community in some way. Some already do. But it would be awesome if an actor volunteered at the local fire department because it would inspire many regular folk to do the same. They look up to you. I'm not saying not to have fun. Just make a difference.

Additionally, to rise to the top of any industry, whether film, theatre, or journalism, you must surround yourself with the most talented people. You won't know who that is if you ignore them because they're of a lower social status. I don't care if they're cool, just if they're gifted.

William Goldman described Hollywood as a caste system in his memoir. A-listers don't hang out with B-listers. The problem is that society has changed. You can't keep the warm image of a movie star while being different in real life because of social media. So you have to be actually inclusive.

I can trust people. But if they have a record of broken promises and unfulfilled obligations, then I wouldn’t develop plans that depend on them coming through. If you keep depending on them, then you’re not a learner or someone who can develop a better plan with better people.

Sixth day this year. Justified my pass

Interstate travel bans on abortion will likely come up for review by the Supreme Court. How it rules will affect abortion funds and people who help women get the reproductive care they want and need. #abortion #politics #law reprorights.substack.com/p/will-inter...

What we should do, and I’m sure some have, is conduct experiments on diseases and then give feedback on the results to ChatGPT. Keep asking for suggestions on possible cures. Keep trying what it suggests and plug back in the feedback. Do that until there is a cure. #medicine #health #science

Someone should do a standup set about some absurd conversation they had with ChatGPT.

Crazy shit

A New York abortion provider once told me that with great power comes great responsibility. So, genuinely famous people have to accept that and amplify intelligent people. Fame isn't meant to be a tool to help themselves get wealth and sex.

Actors shouldn't just build up other actors on social media either. They should build up dramaturgs, theatre historians, screenwriters, playwrights, set designers, and other dramatic professionals. If social media is what they're judged on, then it's the responsibility of famous people to help.

The same is true of politics. If some prominent politicians like Bill Clinton built up obscure but promising political minds by discussing their ideas and tagging them in posts, then the quality of discourse in the Democratic Party would improve because more people would engage with their ideas.

A-list actors should build up lesser-known actors because if a casting director has a choice between a good actor with a significant social media following and simply an influencer, he'll choose based on acting. He won't if the actor has no following. Better movies this way. #movies #film

Asked ChatGPT if it could cure cancer..

It’s possible that in 200 years that AI will be seen as conscious living things and afforded the same humane treatment as people.

Furthermore, if you acted in a movie with someone, you shouldn’t act like you don’t know them at a glitzy party. Ask them how they’re doing and what projects they’re involved in. And truly listen and react.

For instance, Gwyneth Paltrow should say “some guy” took a picture with her and Robert Downey Jr. Say his name. Mention some work he’s been in. Build him up and be a team player as interested in the future stars as you are past or present ones. #movies #film #showbiz

Hollywood must move away from its caste mentality to keep its influence. Ethan Hawke recently said that social media unfortunately affects casting. If that’s the case, those A-list actors must use their platforms to build up talented young thespians and writers. Acknowledge they’re there. #movies

I’m not trying to be the devil’s advocate and people can live their lives anyway they like. But from my perspective, sex is a vitally important part of any romantic relationship. It consummates things and can heal too. I don’t know if that’s really possible with AI. Or as rewarding if it does.

The problem with ageism is that all the people who enable you to do it get too old and die. Then all you’re left with is the people you discriminated against. Will they empower you?

If young people have a leader finally who fights for them, I think you’ll see us start getting ubiquitously known writers and actors. We’ve gone long enough without that type of leader. It unfortunately was that way for the first 20 years of my adulthood. We need to change it for the next group.

One of the most important films in the last 30 years primarily overlooked was Road to Perdition, starring Paul Newman and Tom Hanks. We don't discuss that movie nearly enough insofar as its effectiveness as a comic book adaptation, its use of fade-to-whites, the acting dynamic, etc. #film #movies

This is an interaction I had with ChatGPT. I don't know if it was programmed to answer this. But its favorite writer is Shakespeare, for the reasons given. When I said mine was Mark Twain, it gave an astute answer. It's crazy.
