In 2017, Chase Lee showed up to a walk-on tryout at Alabama. He didn't make it. He spent a year playing on the club team, learning to throw sidearm through lessons and YouTube videos. Today he's one step away from the big leagues. www.nytimes.com/athletic/615...

If Thursday's live session is any indication, Jackson Jobe's new curveball could be the swing-and-miss scythe he desires. “He was electric. I don’t think I can describe it with anything other than that.” www.nytimes.com/athletic/614...

The Chicago White Sox are coming off the worst season in modern history. Will Venable, a popular managerial candidate who withdrew from the Mets and Guardians searches in 2023, signed up for the job anyway. Why? Visited Venable in January to find out: www.nytimes.com/athletic/614...

Not so long ago, Casey Mize was the talk of spring training. Now he's on the roster bubble, experimenting with new sliders, rethinking his fastball and returning to the pitch that got him here. "I think I need to get back to using (the splitter) a lot." www.nytimes.com/athletic/614...

Tigers prospect Hao-Yu Lee has the word "persistence" tattooed down his neck. A reminder of where he's been and where he's going. On the prospect everyone in Tigers camp is raving about: www.nytimes.com/athletic/614...

Gleyber Torres on the Yankees: "To be honest, I don’t know what’s going on there. I believed everything was good, but (now) I think no. So I don’t want to give any comments." Now a Tiger, Torres hopes to cash in on a prove-it year: www.nytimes.com/athletic/614...

An eventful offseason for Colt Keith. He got his truck stolen, got married, changed positions and tinkered with his swing. Now a first baseman, Keith spent his winter modeling himself after Christian Walker. On Keith's second MLB season: www.nytimes.com/athletic/614...

Alex Bregman was Detroit’s obvious missing piece. Without him, the Tigers are left battling the odds once again Tarik Skubal: "Bregman is a great player ... But he’s not on our team. We got guys. We had a good run at it last year, and we’ll be good.” www.nytimes.com/athletic/613...

The Tigers offered Alex Bregman six years and about $171 million with an opt out after 2026, per source. The Tigers did not want to give Bregman an opt-out after the first season

Optimism abounds as a new year begins in Lakeland, but the Alex Bregman specter hangs over everything Inside Day 1 of spring training with the Tigers: www.nytimes.com/athletic/613...

Somewhere along the Connecticut shoreline, there is a 77-year-old engineer. Some of baseball's brightest minds call him the godfather of modern pitching. His name is Paul Nyman. Long after he left baseball in frustration, his work helped reshape the game www.nytimes.com/athletic/611...

Tigers have DFA'd Alex Faedo to make room for Tommy Kahnle

📬Taking a few questions for a Tigers mailbag. Drop them below and please include a first name and last initial ⚾️

Stuff+ matters so much less for guys with long track records, but I was curious. In revised numbers JV is 105, fairly steady last couple of years, while Cobb is just below ave at 99, up from mid 90s earlier in decade. In new numbers 10=1 standard deviation, so even underlying numbers similar too.

Justin Verlander and Alex Cobb each signed for one year and $15 million. Their surface numbers compare pretty similarly over the past two seasons. Verlander is going into his age-42 season. Cobb is going into his age-37 season.

The Tigers ranked 29th in on-base percentage last season. Even from Aug. 13 on, their .712 OPS was only 14th in MLB. Their 642 runs allowed was the franchise's third lowest mark since 1968. The Detroit Tigers need offense. Will they pay to get it? www.nytimes.com/athletic/604...

Akil Baddoo has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple A

The Tigers have interest in Roki Sasaki. But do they a realistic shot? Plus: — Tigers otherwise may be done with SPs — Akil Baddoo DFA — Javier Báez update www.nytimes.com/athletic/598...

The Tigers' signing of Alex Cobb is official. Cobb will make $15 million on a one-year deal. He can earn a $1 million bonus for reaching 140 innings and another $1 million if he reaches 150 innings. So the contract could max at $17 million Akil Baddoo was DFA'd as the corresponding move

Scott Harris on Roki Sasaki: "Every team in baseball wants Sasaki. We do, too. We're hard at work on a presentation to position this organization as appealing to Roki and his agent."
