It’s Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury weekend …

Being fed takeaways this morning…

Following our instagram hack by what my friend and IT expert @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social described as 'utter bastards', we're back with a new account. Give us a follow there please, help us rebuild an audience of readers.

Theology pals! Did you guys realise that Anna Rowlands was the topic of an op-ed in the leading newspaper in Ireland, written by one of our most influential politicians of the last generation?: www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025...

Another few days perhaps until it reaches peak magnificence, this magnolia on the wall of @pembrokeoxford.bsky.social as seen from my office @campionhall.bsky.social Campion Hall, Oxford. There are worse views.

Yes please. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Swindon sundown.

Fairford attractions. A lovely visit, welcoming guide, friendly town. Stunning glass and fascinating history of local philanthropy.

A new condensed version of Frederick Copleston’s 11 vol history of philosophy has just been published. I imagine I wasn’t the only student who relied on these as sole texts for many an essay. www.thinkingfaith.org/articles/fre... Photo: Copleston’s gown still doing duty @campionhall.bsky.social

Talks on the philosopher Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury and an archaeological dig at his childhood home; first weekend in April.

Good to be able to welcome @centraldorsetca.bsky.social to this platform. If you have interests in #Dorset do take a look.

This may be of interest to quite a few of you. Research and lived experience combined for insights and reflections on social cohesion in places experiencing conflict.

Delighted to find @sundaymiscellany.bsky.social here at last.

Deeply appreciating the strong affirmation, (echoing perhaps CP Snow’s Two Cultures), of the place of humanities alongside sciences. And this fine piece of wisdom from Harold Macmillan: ‘Young man, don’t do too much, too soon.'

The more I read of Harold Macmillan the more I appreciate his wisdom. To a young William Hague: 'Young man, don’t do too much, too soon.' www.ox.ac.uk/news/2025-02...

The Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury Society (THoMS) is now on Bluesky! Follow for information about the Society, our regular Events and facts about the great man and his works. #thomashobbes #philosophy #history #Malmesbury #polymath

The livestream option for this term’s Campion Lecture might be of interest to some of you. Booking details in the web page below. www.campion.ox.ac.uk/news/campion...

Looking forward to this from colleagues in Oxford on some of the inspiring groups that gave lived expression to early Catholic Social Teaching. blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/pro...

For the Feast of St Thomas Aquinas here’s a cartoon by GK Chesterton in the Campion Hall collection; Aquinas hauls a Jesuit heavenwards.

Watched Conclave. Hadn’t read the book so the ending was a surprise. Loved the camera work; stunningly beautiful images. Expected the intrigue. But that phrase, “ordained ministry”?

Just a remnant on a brass plate now but still the best of all names for a legal firm. And yes, these families really did exist back in the day #Sligo

Model disappointment…

Donegal wanders, mostly visiting ancestors.

Hello Lucan, Co Dublin, as I pass through on a bus. I went to school here, learned to drive here some 40 yrs ago. Pleased that there are still a few landmarks I recognise.

Avebury wanders, still frozen.

“If every organisation could find out what they were best at, and if they did their best with what they were best at, for the good of others, it would get very exciting.” www.irishtimes.com/obituaries/2...

A bit wonky but we’re Ephiphany-ready now. There’s still time to buy puff pastry and ground almonds to rustle up a festive celebration of the Magi. www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/gale...

2024 Less than I hoped for, more than I expected. I’ll settle for that in 2025. Athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh go léir.

Christmas morning, Dorset in gloom.

Dinah Roe Kendall of Sheffield, and Charles Mahoney @campionhall.bsky.social Nollaig Shona daoibh go léir. Happy Christmas all.

While I will be missing the nativity pheasants of Sligo, I have grown very fond of this nativity, by Charles Mahoney in the Lady Chapel, Campion Hall, Oxford. @campionhall.bsky.social

Good to have escaped to Dorset for the holiday, but I will miss the holy pheasants of the nativity grotto in Kellystown, Sligo.

Brian Friel, gazes out from an envelope and draws attention to the fact that postage from Ireland to England is €2.20 or £1.83 at today’s rate. Whereas cards from England to Ireland are £2.60. Perhaps due to difference between the Irish mile at 2240 yds and its British equivalent at 1760 yds?

Back to the gloom. @campionhall.bsky.social #Oxford

Pleased to see this portrait (left) by Margaret Fletcher of Charles Plater SJ, champion of Catholic social action and Master of Campion Hall, Oxford, in the Jesuit Archives, London. Quite different to the one we have in the Hall by Harry Salomon, but dates suggest both were from the same sitting.

To London, and time for a pilgrimage to the Freud Museum where there’s an exhibition on women as early analysands and analysts, and a few changes since my last visit in 2019, including space for the replica desk chair, designed by Felix Augenfeld.

News reaches me of the death of Sr Eileen Keating PBVM back in September. A great colleague in Sheffield in the ‘90s when she was pastor of the Holy Family parish, Arbourthorne, Sheffield, and part of the Manor ecumenical team. www.indcatholicnews.com/news/50632

Some of my new followers on this platform have something in common. Can you spot it? (BTW, I studied psychiatry, not orthopaedics, so I probably don’t have much to say about knee replacements)

Two weeks to Christmas Eve and the big DIY store has not only sold out of festive lights but they’ve also cleared their seasonal aisle. Oh well … Will just have to dig out the soldering iron.
