Wired has had good coverage that sticks out. You can subscribe for just $10/year, but they have a $100 option too if you want to be generous. Happy to do that!

good advice. while you wait for them to do that, you can subscribe to citationneeded.news

So here’s a simple request to Apple. Apple iMessage needs to enable “disappearing messages.” And they need to do it soon. blog.cryptographyengineering.com/2025/03/01/d...

German friends, can anyone explain why the set of "Das Ding des Jahres" is a stereotypical North American suburban home? are there houses like that anywhere in Germany? it doesn't even have those cool German windows or shades! www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

"half would be enough!" - from a customer last week after our briefings on how AWS Security works, how many controls we have. That's a good summary of how far we go. Our new AWS Trust Center provides the detail and insights into how we secure the cloud. aws.amazon.com/blogs/securi...

Reading Knuth's "The Art of Computer Programming" fascicles as they came out was incredibly key to discovering the Shuffle Sharding pattern, but I don't think I've ever written about it before ... news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4297...

I'm too tired to stay up and commemorate, but for those who may be tracking; tonight at about 02:38:24 AM Eastern time, we will 1% of the way through the second Trump Presidential term. ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░ 1%

Are there any events to commemorate 100 years of Student's t-distrubition? It was first published in 1925, by William Sealy Gosset, the 37-years head-brewer of Guinness in Dublin at the time. Any idea @dwmalone.bsky.social or others?

it's a friday once again ❤️

I don't think anyone can accuse Apple of failing to promote Severance when they have Ben Stiller and the cast doing a live play as a promo at Grand Central Terminal. One of the best TV shows. Hoping for an amazing Season 2! www.reddit.com/r/SeveranceA...

I remember when Skype video launched, the first reliable mass free video chat, and we saw a huge unexpected uptake from the signing community. Obviously those people could use IRC, AIM, ICQ and other text chats already … but the video conveys so much much more.

i see a lot of people throwing around accusations about which agency or politician is at fault for not preventing the LA fires and the answer is only: the agencies and politicians who have let global warming exacerbate for 100+ years. which is everybody.

Cryptography/Security researchers. Please, for your own safety, and for peace on earth, please please don't crack other people's real world keys no matter how cool it looks. In many places you could no joke go to jail. news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4263...

Boots theory applies to Costco, basically.

We just did this. A boon to Amazon, which can now automate nonce generation instead of having @colmmacc.bsky.social do them by hand.

Folks in Ireland ... The Ferryman is playing at the Gaiety and it's well worth seeing if you can. I was lucky enough to catch the Broadway production and it left a deep impression. www.gaietytheatre.ie/events/the-f...

In 2024 I got to see the Northern Lights with my wife from our own house, a full eclipse from Maine's clear blue skies in the center path surrounded by family, Dublin in a long cozy winter, and best of all; our son grow up into a chatty and bratty unstoppable toddler. Easily a best year ever.

Me: uses the word “almost” in a sentence Toddler: Elmo, Elmo, Elmo, Elmo, Elmo! ELMO!

Here's my t-shirt from the NET201 session at AWS re:Invent for no particular reason.

Great to see NIST take up a wide block cipher mode! At AWS we have to carefully engineer around the 128-bit safety limits. Otherwise hyper-scale systems like VPC, S3, and EBS would exceed those limits in seconds! 256-bits is much more misuse-proof. csrc.nist.gov/News/2024/ni...
