Pure, excoriating anger from Francis Fukuyama. Every word correct. Apart from the end- the Americans who voted for Trump knew exactly what they were doing- they just didn't care. We have to hope they start to care soon. open.substack.com/pub/persuasi...

Irish media - Discuss

Useful, readable and timely overview of the Irish political ‘N’ word: Neutrality with @bentonra.bluesky.social and Dr Ray Murphy, of interest to any student of Irish politics. Should Ireland revisit its neutrality? Prof Ben Tonra and Dr Raymond Murphy debate www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025...

Most insane part is that you or I have as much right to storm into a government agency and seize computers as Musk does. As in: zero. But it’s all being normalized by #complicitmedia. “doge” is bullshit.

I just watched a bus kneel to allow an elderly woman to disembark, and I burst into tears, thinking of all the small things we can do + have done to make the world kinder — and how that’s so contrary to the current regime’s delusional embrace of individualistic meritocracy + cruelty-as-the-point 😢

I have just been sent a shareable link so this article can be accessed for free: www.wsj.com/health/welln...

Musk is unelected and hasn’t been confirmed by the Senate to any official position. His aides are not government employees. What the hell is going on here? Oligarchy is a big understatement at this point.

JOURNALISM, IRELAND: APPLYING A FRAME TO CREATE AN IMPRESSION A recent contributor to Liveline on RTE Radio had a wonderfully daft demand. He wanted motorists to be compelled to wear high-vis jackets while driving. Joe Duffy took the highly unusual step of rebuffing him. @news.rte.ie

Danger to the world, directly and indirectly.

USDA Inspector General Phyllis Fong was forcibly removed from her office at the department, by security, after after she refused to comply with the illegal Trump order that fired her. Now that’s what you call resisting! 👏🏽👏🏽

IRELAND. It is RTE policy to frame ... well. everything as failure of a member or indeed of the entire Government. That implies a public service obligation to differentiate between THE Government and government generally. @rte.ie @news.rte.ie

Top notch on BBC football website: "A Nottingham Forest fan has just won a Bournemouth laundry basket in the half-time competition here at The Vitality Stadium."

An important statement by Tánaiste Simon Harris - what the EU also wants to hear "Our allies + colleagues in eastern Europe are under attack. Physical war rages on our Continent + cyberwar + espionage threaten us all. Defence cannot be an added extra and must remain at the heart of policymaking."

This week on Cleaning Up, @mliebreich.bsky.social examines the promising but complex role of AI in the global transition to cleaner energy in our audio adaptation of Michel's article for BloombergNEF - Generative AI: The Power and the Glory. Out now - www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwZ2...

I'm waiting for my copy of D.Spiegelhalter's The Art of Uncertainty and I'm thinking about journalists who produce the scare stories: generally speaking are they exploiting a public unable to understand risk or are they demonstrating their own failing.

Sam Harris on his history with Elon Musk, how they fell out over Covid & Musk's crippling incapacity to admit error (also, implicitly, a story of Harris' naïveté + a general lesson about why aristocracy/oligarchy make for brittle politics, economics & culture): samharris.substack.com/p/the-troubl...

10 mins. into RTE Radio 1’s Drivetime, Tuesday 14th, Pearse Doherty claimed that his party “had had the best election in over a 100 years”. Longevity is a myth his party is desperate to perpetuate. They casually make the claim over and over again confident that repetition will make it seem true./...

Lá breithe fírinneach 11th January 1970. That's when Prov. SF was founded. Dropping the "Prov." doesn't change that. It just facilitates a clever lie.

It’s starting: The U.S. govt under Trump should intervene to stop the EU from fining American tech companies for breaching antitrust rules Mark Zuckerberg said late Friday ↘️https://www.politico.eu/article/zuckerberg-urges-trump-to-stop-eu-from-screwing-with-fining-us-tech-companies/

Facebook is ushering in “a world without facts” says Nobel winner. She’s right: Zuckerberg and Musk care only about profit and power, and they are acting as haindmaidens of authoritarian regimes. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/j...

"What is left for all of us? A cynical shrug is not enough. We should demand that Trump pull back from his threat to issue mass pardons to the insurrectionists. We should insist that members of Congress speak out. We should shout from the rooftops." brennancenter.substack.com/p/trumps-pla...

I think journalists, policymakers and good govt types are struggling to understand DOGE because their mental model is that it is a government reform commission, operating like previous ones. Maybe. But it might be better to start thinking about it as a hostile takeover of the govt by oligarchs.
