The DJ at the Portland ICE protest is playing “Party in the USA.” There are probably 250 people here, maybe the biggest nighttime crowd yet. So far, no tear gas or anything else deployed by cops—agents have remained behind their gate, which was wide open when I arrived and is now only cracked.

It also perplexes me that publishers push subscriptions & 'events,' BUT the system didn't work, the titles were all over, a miniseries where every issue has a different name so they can all be a #1, etc. - - AND you have to pay for the subscription system (that doesn't work!). Seemed lopsided.

There are too many titles. Stores can't make money trying to sell a title that 1 person buys. Companies don't print enough extra if it becomes popular. And contrarily, folks are told they can't miss anything. Make it easy.

Kids would read more American comics if they were encouraged to crumple, tear, throw them in backpacks and generally beat the hell out of them. Big advantage of manga and scholastic ogns is that they’re sturdy and no adult is telling you to delicately put them in a plastic sleeve in a cool dark box.

ICE just arrested Brad Lander, the NYC Comptroller and one of the leading candidates for Mayor, without grounds. He was conducting routine immigration court work, escorting individuals from hearings. He asked ICE for their warrant - well within his legal rights. This is political intimidation.

Bay Area con in high school in the 80s. Star Trek was ever-present. Cons were at hotels & half was events, half "dealer room." I found CRISIS missing issues, then went to see Walter Koenig "Chekov" speak. They were in the hotel ballrooms & speakers had to walk through the crowd, not like today. 1/2

Nice piece on David, who passed away last month after longtime illnesses (strokes, etc.). Wrote Hulk for a decade, & brought in new readers - to this day, & MCU, it's now psychological.
