The Thunderbirds theme is the only example of positive masculinity

'Going Home', the first episode of Going Straight, was originally broadcast on this day in 1978. Despite living in the shadow of Porridge, it pulled in some 14 million viewers and earned Ronnie Barker his fourth and final BAFTA award for Best Light Entertainment Performance.

Lots of you have been asking plenty of valid questions about what this release will contain and the formats we're presenting it in. We've got a YQA coming early next week that should answer everything!

Ursula le Guin, on the accusation that fantasy is an escape from reality

I am aghast, I say AGHAST, that Danger Man's surging, Edwin Astley theme gets replaced by a jittery, unconfident harpsichord tune for the series' renewed hour-long format. Instantly circling back to the half-hour episodes. ...wait - Astley did BOTH themes??

"Science fiction lends itself readily to imaginative subversion of any status quo. Bureaucrats and politicians, who can't afford to cultivate their imaginations, tend to assume it's all ray-guns and nonsense, good for children." - Ursula K. Le Guin (2012) [Anthology idea: Ray-guns and Nonsense]

A pleasant evening's astronomy done. Mars, Sirius and Jupiter still looking mighty fine, and caught a shooting star. Let's slap on a bit of Star Trek TNG and call the day a win.

What if I started my own Gerry Anderson reaction YouTube series where I just pinpoint all the instances of which sound effects from the Supermarionation series appeared in other ITC productions?

Anyway, if you want little transformers comics, I got ya covered.

There’s something of a paradox in the idea that the welfare system under thatcher (which I’m sure she hated) allowed more artists to thrive than the welfare system under the current labour government.

Was there ever a name for the subgenre of 20th century sci-fi art depicting vast colonies housed within cylindrical worlds that were built from lush, far-reaching green landscapes?

(grand designs presenter): It's now been 28 years since I met the delusional millionaire who burned his house down to replace it with an ambitious yet controversial brutalist nightmare mausoleum. So how is the project progressing? (the worst man in the universe): Well, Kevin, my wife left me

Highly optimistic to expect a Season 2.

Really looking forward to the eight episode limited series where Bond puts on his bow tie and orders a martini in the final thirty seconds.

I just think it's really cool that there's a lot of Thunderbirds and Space: 1999 stuff happening this year. 😁

Well that's the Bond films effectively dead then. Broccoli and Wilson knew that the secret to the series' success was keeping it a series, not a "franchise", having firm creative control, and not glutting the market. All things that a company like Amazon can't possibly comprehend.

I like to say this periodically so: "Man of Iron" is one of the best Transformers comics ever made and you absolutely need to read it if you never have before. Totally unlike anything that's ever been created for the brand since, and all the better for it.

Thunderbirds are GO… back to their original format! As Thunderbirds turns 60, every episode of the classic show comes out on Blu-Ray in high definition, in the original 4:3 format– just as they were meant to be seen & heard– complete with the original mono soundtrack. But that’s not all...
