Interesting evening. Tried watching @transplanarrpg.bsky.social for the first time, but found myself banned immediately. Must have gotten on someone's ban list somehow? Dunno. I'm sure it was a great show, and y'all should go check them out.

I am going into 2025 with a bit of good news: after almost exactly a full year, I have a good new job to look forward to. First day is in just under two weeks.

Stop Forcing A.I. into Fucking EVERYTHING!

Ran into a comment today that there are bad safety tools. I don't agree with that as stated. There may be tools that don't work for a particular group, and if that's the only group you ever play with, by all means dismiss the tools you don't like from your mind. But.

Not going to repeat what I tweeted about killer whales being apex predators because they're more orca-nized. But I will point out that killer whales have actually taken out yachts because their attacks were... Orca-strated. [csi-miami.sunglasses.gif]

Questions like these make shows like Star Trek: Lower Decks a thing. For Stargate, episodes like "The Other Guys." Often played for comedy, probably because if you could play it for straight-up drama they'd do it in the main show. I like this sort of thing for ttrpgs in the settings.

Though this advice is definitely pointed toward 'messy relationship games,' it's useful advice for other games as well--just dialed back somewhat. Characters in RPGs should be driven like stolen cars.

Dunno if it's too early to start thinking about this stuff, but one of my goals for 2025 is to try to take 20-30 minutes after each game session to organize my notes. Every time I've done it, the next session has been much better, and more comfortable to run. I just want to be more consistent.

Never, ever put off buying book one of something because book two isn't out. That's a good way to ensure book two is dropped by the publisher. Sure, a couple of big noisy boys have let you down. Most of us can, do, and are burning to in fact finish what we started, given half a chance.

Has anyone run a published 5e adventure straight up, without alteration? I find no end of "How to fix [adventure]" articles and videos, but not a lot of "this adventure was great!" I don't expect adventures to be perfect, but I wish the players work of making them so wasn't so downplayed.

I have never played Curse of Strahd. Just never got to it, was busy playing other game systems, stuff happened. But I keep hearing how good it is, so I found a copy. Strahd's kinda gross, right? The motivation, I mean. I don't want to have to roleplay the not-far-from-s.a. creepy ex vibe, thanks.

I do like that the 2024 DMG seems to be aimed at new GMs learning their craft. It's not terrible. But for the same money a new GM can pick up "So You Want to Be a Game Master" by @alexandrian.bsky.social and "Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master" from @slyflourish.com. Spend your money wisely.

Here is a great 'let's read' thread about the DMG 2024: not the worst DMG, but certainly the most recent. In my unsponsored opinion, I got the better GM's guide last November—it's called "So You Want to Be a Gamemaster." bsky.app/profile/alex...
