🚨 Excited for the latest paper from the lab, led by Zhang & Arsham. Can we coarse-grain a #ComplexNetwork while preserving macroscopic network flows? Surprisingly, the answer is positive, and we have shown it by means of StatPhys + Machine Learning. 🧵 1/ www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Great talk about what complexity science is and can be, by @thilogross.bsky.social in a packed room @comunelab.bsky.social in Padua. A week full of #ComplexNetworks #ComplexSystems #ComplexityThoughts

🚨 In the AI era, we think that precision medicine must balance data-driven insights with model-informed strategies. #ComplexSystems science bridges this gap, offering explainable, dynamic models for personalized care. #PrecisionMedicine #DigitalTwins 🧪 #MedSky #NetSky 👉 rdcu.be/d6CJJ 🧵 1/

"[My adviser] told me that instead of focusing on finding a dream job, I should think about what I am good at and what makes me happy at least 80% of the time. This advice surprised me at first, but it ended up being exactly what I needed to hear." scim.ag/3DHtLCc

The analysis of BlueSky during the #Xodus by our very own @manlius.bsky.social has been featured by Science. @bsky.app is structurally different from the other place, to date. Will we benefit from this difference?

This 2024 I’ve been humbled by conversations on #ComplexityThoughts and its (unexpected) growth. From the risks of new pandemics to the promises of AI, from climate change to evolution, I explored many systems through the lens of #complexity science balancing the technical w/ the accessible. 🧵1/

According to the Oxfam report, it seems that one of the largest threats to humankind is.. the billionaires. They spend in 90' the same #CO2 you spend in a lifetime. Low/Middle-income countries paying the most in terms of human lives 🌍🌐🧪 #Climate oxfamilibrary.openrepository.com/bitstream/ha...

🚨 Just in time, 🎅! #NetSky #Complexity🧪 We compare human mobility datasets from 7 data-sources, tracing 500M+ ppl in 145 countries, to test that if statistical properties observed are robust regardless of data gathering & processing techniques. Guess what? 👇👇👇 www.nature.com/articles/s42... 1/

It is almost absurd, surreal, that we have to stress this point at the edge of 2025... The starting step of any scientific endeavor should be to operationalize the subject of the investigation. Critical for reproducibility and any theoretical advancement.

Xmas is close, holidays are going to start. Let's take some time for an experiment of high societal interest 🧪. 👉 Repost if you have no idea what the Mandalorian is talking about. 👉 Like if you know it.

Thank you all 🙏 for enthusiastically replying to this provoking post. I tend to align with Jacob's tinkerer and I think that a good summary is that evolution: - is in the eyes of the observer - is an erratic explorer in the space of possible beings, moving along pathways constrained by its past

Global temperatures 🌡️in 2023 were record-breaking, but the reasons were not fully understood. There was a remaining gap of 0.2°C waiting for an explanation... ☁️☁️ Coverage: phys.org/news/2024-12... Paper: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

"we reveal a trend of accelerating brain size growth in more recent lineages. This nuanced understanding deepens our insight into the evolutionary trajectory of human cognition and behavior, crucial for unraveling the complexities of our species’ unique traits" 🧠 🧪 www.pnas.org/doi/full/10....

It has been hilarious, and sometimes frustrating, to read the AI/LLM enthusiasts claiming AGI was behind the corner. New evidence that when facing new math problems (ie, not used for training) the state of the art methods solve under 2% of them. #AGISaga #AI arxiv.org/abs/2411.04872

When the Chicxulub asteroid hit our planet, erasing 75% of life on 🌎,our ancestors (Eutheria) looked more or less like this. To get an idea of the time since then, imagine counting every second no-stop for nearly 2 years: every second is worth an year and that's 66M yr. Evolution takes its time.

If platforms like Bluesky rely on people, not algorithms, to amplify content, does it bring us closer to true democracy 2.0 (ie,online)? Or does human bias just replace algorithmic bias, mirroring the physical 🌎? There are pro & cons in both cases, and honestly I don't know yet which one is worst

About the mysterious disease in #DRC: “Amid speculation that the outbreak could represent "Disease X" [a terms used to describe a previously unknown pathogen w/ the potential to cause a pandemic] the @who.int emphasized it was "an undiagnosed disease rather than an unknown" one.”

Analyzing follower distribution of ~5M users (~20% of BlueSky) Expected: older accounts have ++followers. Surprising finding? Even after just 3-4 months, some users surpass 100k followers (1000x less likely than oldest accounts, but it happens!) Explosive growth... 💥 #scaling #ComplexSystems 🧵

🚨 Thrilled for this new paper @comunelab.bsky.social! Led by @tomscag w/ @oriartime.bsky.social TL;DR: a framework to estimate systemic risk for human-made #ComplexNetworks due to extreme events & natural catastrophes #ComplexSystems #Climate #Resilience www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... 🧵1/

Practical example: the source paper is interesting, but the result is not “hypo-connected brains”. They use fMRI, therefore the result is ”less statistically correlated brains“, which is valuable. 👉 No “functional” w/o a model for dynamics 👉 No “connectivity” w/o a model for structure That's it.

“Mendes et al. synthesized data on plant-animal seed dispersal interactions for the whole of Europe and characterized each species interaction as being of low, high, or very high concern based on the species’ conservation statuses and population trajectories“ 🧪 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

This week's NOVA is Decoding the Universe: Quantum. I am one of the talking heads! I think physicists are going to struggle talking about quantum mechanics as long as we think of the quantum state - not our observational outcomes - as representing what is real. www.youtube.com/watch?v=t06a...

It's great to see the massive wave of people coming to 🦋. Here's my first stab at a Computational Social Science starter pack: go.bsky.app/2m6iQ68 Go check out similar lists to bootstrap your network: bsky.app/starter-pack... bsky.app/starter-pack... Wonder if these lists could be merged somehow..

Can brain wiring be optimized using artificial/engineering means? That would require intervening in highly complex developmental/neurogenetic processes. Could this be done, perhaps guided by AI (my drawing below)? Or are there fundamental constraints in physics?

A starter pack for researchers using #scaling #allometry methods in ecology, economics, computer science, physical sciences, etc. Scaling offers insights into complex systems, linking dynamics from cells to individuals to societies & ecosystems - please add your name! go.bsky.app/EuNK9Na 🧪🦋🦫
