We hope that by unpacking and understanding the main local contributions to habitat suitability, we can help guide restoration and conservation efforts to improve biodiversity in the future. (more to come soon!)

To our surprise, we found shadow distributions covered very large portions of the expected area where species could occur. On average, negative impacts occured in 90% of potentially suitable areas, and 50% of potentially suitable areas were impacted by multiple anthropogenic threats.

We use SDMs and explainable AI to quantify the local contribution of environmental variables to species' habitat suitability scores.
This helped quantify the shadow distribution: where species would naturally occur, but are limited by human impacts.
