Wrote some stuff about a time when Democrats fought back--VERY publicly--against Republican budget cuts. White crosses, mountains of utility bills, a green bus just for good measure, and a whole coherent vision of economic democracy: coryhaala.org/general/how-...

With one (big, but small) tweak...approval from the internal committee and faculty board came today. Holy crap, "When Democrats Won the Heartland" is heading into production. Thanks to @illinoispress.bsky.social for continuing to make this dream...actually happen?

Got the hot new cabin (beach? idk it's 20 out and I shoveled off a lake ice rink today) read for the season. Congrats to @brentcebul.bsky.social, @lilygeismer.bsky.social, and all the authors on what I'm already finding to be a really enjoyable and challenging volume.

This @econmarshall.bsky.social post hit me today, a day I sent "press releases" on letterhead to newspapers in towns with WPA sites on which students published research (w/Living New Deal). And got responses WITHIN AN HOUR! Because despite asking university PR to send out hits a month ago...

The fish was an odd contribution, but students discussing Nina Simon's "The Art of Relevance" today came up with the idea of a "non-newtonian mission statement," which will be making me chuckle AND think for some time.

Once again, exactly two tater tots over a perfectly-tiled pan. HOW DO THEY KNOW

Said banger, by the inimitable @econmarshall.bsky.social: www.bostonreview.net/articles/a-r...

1. Absolute BANGER by Marshall. Go read it right now. 2. Amusing, since last night I was reminded of this quote in my book: "If we'd have been liberals, we’d have retrained them to do something else. As populists, we changed the market structure that was fucking them over. That's the difference.”

Important transnational dimension to this working-class struggle. Great read. Can't wait to read @stevenhigh.bsky.social's new book on Bob Rae and what a bold progressive vision for deindustrialized North America should look like.

God, how desperate is the Mountain West getting in conference realignment?

There's never been a DNC Chair from the Upper Midwest. Now, it's likely that the next (Ken Martin or Ben Wikler) will be! Why we should realize that there's a historically significant, progressive populist Democratic politics from the Midwest: clioandthecontemporary.com/2025/01/31/k...

The next chair of the Democratic National Committee will likely come from the Upper Midwest. @coryhaala.bsky.social explores the tradition of progressive, populist politics from Democrats in the Midwest in order to better understand the region. clioandthecontemporary.com/2025/01/31/k...

To prepare for the DNC's imminent chair vote on Feb 1, check out this insightful piece by @coryhaala.bsky.social about the Midwest's progressive, populist traditions that the top candidates, Ken Martin and Ben Wikler, can bring to the role. Be sure to follow @cliocontemporary.bsky.social

Happy to have the chance for UWSP students in HIST 395 (Seminar in Public History) to meet with great community stakeholders and learn about the projects we'll be working on all semester! #publichistory

Most recent episode of Heartland History is out. Listen to @coryhaala.bsky.social discuss How the Heartland Went Red with the author, @stephanieternullo.bsky.social. @princetonupress.bsky.social @midwesternhistory.bsky.social podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/h...

Starting to wonder if cost-cutting and consolidation in higher ed is having consequences...

Is economic populism the future of the Democratic Party? A month ago I had the pleasure of giving a UWSP College of Letters and Sciences Faculty Forum lecture: "Tim Walz and the Midwestern Liberal Tradition". Now, you can watch it! Just follow the link: coryhaala.org/midwest/prog...

Just called Brad Gilbert "the James Carville of tennis" and I think I might need to go lie down for a while.

The graphics on the Tarleton State mug I was gifted when I taught there in 2020 have finally worn away (you can faintly make out its fight song lyrics, which are to the same tune as "On wisconsin." Gross). Now easily repurposeable to ANY purple team (like Stevens Point)! Call me a free agent.

You'll be stunned to learn that there are exactly two blue states in America, and they are California and New York! As a Minnesotan this was disappointing to learn, but I will take solace in knowing that places like Colorado, New Mexico, and Illinois are similarly afflicted.

I have taken the resources that were in the budget and which you were probably saving for higher education Forgive me they were needed to feed the AI bubble and to dismantle the humanities

Another semester in the books at #UWSP means another chance to brag about some great student work in #publichistory, survey-to-seminar-style. 🧵 for some cool undergraduate history work:

This Mpetshi Perricard-Monfils match is fantastic.
