Spent my Monday morning reading the UK Gov's proposal then filling out the consultation. Annoyed I had to, but I had to. Creative rights are one of the few powers we have, they must be protected, in fact they must be strengthened. The UK creative industry is a powerhouse - AI is a hammer blow to it.

Today the #MakeItFair campaign was launched by the Creative Rights in AI coalition ppa.co.uk/make-it-fair. Last year @ulises-mejias.bsky.social and I called out AI companies' data grab for the colonial act it is: www.penguin.co.uk/books/455862.... The first battle of many! please support it

Free speech no longer exists in the US government. For @theatlantic.com I spoke with 12+ federal workers in 6 agencies who said the Trump administration’s actions have led to pervasive self-censorship, even on issues some view as critical to national security. 1/ www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

This is a 'cultural revolution', as Edward Luce of the FT put it last week, of the Chinese sort. Resistance will need to be equally ruthless. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

When the mechanisms of democracy turn against democracy itself

A worrying but somehow not surprising trend in Machine Learning

New from me: Social media and the fate of the world. As @couldrynick.bsky.social points out, Big Tech is jeopardizing our ability to deliberate or cooperate on worldwide problems. buttondown.com/creativegood...

Here’s the full text of @eli.bsky.social ’s speech at the Vatican. It may be a long read, but it will leave you with hope, insights, and questions for the future of social media.

How should we make sense of the #MuskDOGE assault on US federal government, and what might resistance look like? Here's the take of myself and @ulises-mejias.bsky.social, just published by @techpolicypress.bsky.social www.techpolicy.press/data-colonia...

This brilliant piece by @labourlewis.bsky.social is the best UK response I have seen yet to the Trump administration's apparent abandoning of Europe last week. He really gets the seriousness of the situation and imagines a democratic way forward!!. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

We should NEVER have allowed commercial corporations to design our world of social interaction, our 'space of the world', commercial social media. Really enjoyed making this podcast about my new book. Thanks @markhurst.bsky.social (and sorry for the typo earlier)

Had huge fun recording this conversation with @markhusk.bsky.social for tectonic.fm

In 2023, I blew the whistle on corporate influence over academic research, when I was terminated at Harvard Kennedy School after launching a project to publish Francis Haugen's disclosures about Meta. In my own words: www.thecrimson.com/article/2024... Academia must push back agains technofascism

We must all thank Alondra Nelson for putting some essential points on the table about AI: www.techpolicy.press/three-fallac...

Exactly. This is an attempt at a historical reset by force, like most coups!

It’s inexplicable that Ofcom chooses not to powers explicitly amended into the #OnlineSafetyAct to tackle small but high-harm platforms when a suicide forum linked to almost 100 UK deaths continues to cause preventable harm @mollyroseorg.bsky.social www.telegraph.co.uk/business/202...

the Big Tech broligarchy is deeply complicit with US border policy, says @ulises-mejias.bsky.social in this op ed: www.aljazeera.com/amp/opinions...

What does the shut-down of consumer financial watchdog CFPB mean? If in the last financial crisis of 2008 you lost your home; its value; your job; saw retirement savings plummet, get ready. Because the Trump Adm. has taken away one of the most important safeguards for your $.

This summary of the US COUP WITHOUT GUNS that is #DOGEaccess is excellent . . . (and yes, I know many people stopped their WaPo subscriptions after Bezos blocked support for Harris, but right now this is some of the best mainstream media we have): www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

IMAGINE if in 1946 the US government had imposed sanctions on the UK because the creation of the NHS and state education system penalised the upper classes with too much tax? That would NOT have been OK, and this is worse!! www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

UK press coverage of the Musk takeover (I'd say COUP WITHOUT GUNS) of the US government machinery has been much too slow (while the BBC has hardly mentioned it). This excellent blog brings us up to date: www.lawfaremedia.org/article/elon...

A COUP is going on in real time in the heart of the US government. If only the UK press would notice, instead of focussing on the surface froth. This great piece lays out the details clearly: www.techdirt.com/2025/01/31/e...

Is there any doubt that this is authoritarianism? Please remember: we can fight back on all levels and all scales.

We need to wake up in universities to the real nature of Big Tech's alliance with government in the US as @lmesseri.bsky.social says

Fantastic piece out by @beccalew.bsky.social today about how technofascism was always a part of, and goal of, Big Tech and Silicon Valley. www.theguardian.com/technology/n...

Friends, for something to be open source, we need to see 1. The data it was trained & evaluated on 2. The code 3. Model architecture 4. Model weights. DeepSeek only gives 3, 4. And I'll see the day that anyone gives us #1 without being forced to do so, because all of them are stealing data.

Still a crucial reference point

As everyone's becoming an expert on Nvidia stock prices and moats and Jevons paradox, I've got a new Green Paper out on inclusive innovation, social capital, and technology diffusion - three things that literally no one is talking about! www.careful.industries/inclusive-in...

This is a really important post by leading commentator @karenhao.bsky.social that punctures the rhetoric of 'large-scale' AI and its drive to trash the planet: driven by inflated investment bets and in search of illusory knowledge gains.

Scaling, with AI as elsewhere, is basically an extractivist instinct. It works for a particular mindset, which doesn't mean it is efficient or effective.

an important blog from Guy Thomas Holder that sums up the risks of allowing AI to let rip in education very well: guythomasholder.substack.com/p/the-wave-i...

For Peter Thiel, racism and colonialism are distant history, while government practices that saved lives under the pandemic are an 'ancien regime' that must be overthrown. This warped 'history' is truly menacing www.ft.com/content/a46c...

Trump's freezing of all civil rights cases at the DOJ is not part of an anti-DEI agenda, but an anti-civil rights agenda. DOJ was *founded* to protect Black rights during Reconstruction. That this difference is unclear speaks to the success of conservative propagandists and the failures of liberals.

We need to be realistic about what Elon Musk is.

Exactly!

Honored to speak at this important event in May to mark 50 years of great work in Media Studies at CAMRI U of Westminster

If you're new to thinking about whiteness and white supremacy (e.g. why was there a Nazi salute at the inauguration) today is a good day to sign up for long-time writer about whiteness and white supremadcy @jessienyc.bsky.social's substack. jessiedaniels.substack.com

The goal of social media should not be to extract wealth FROM pur social lives, but build a better social world.

Looking forward to being in Frankfurt and taking part in this event. I'll talk about questions arising from social media and AI.
