The first Hefted newsletter of 2025 featuring the News Gather; @fellranger.bsky.social remembers his old friend AW on a Coast to Coast wander; @postalpathsguy.bsky.social finds Jesus in Eskdale; and the Woodland Trust choose their five favourite Cumbrian woods. hefted.substack.com/p/hefted-new...

#142: Review of 2024 ...in which we unwrap a selection box of our favourite clips from the year past in the company of Cumbria Wildlife Trust's Jamie Normington and Low Sizergh Barn co-owner Alison Park.

#141: A Cumbrian Christmas Cracker ...in which we congregate at the Armitt, Ambleside for a night of readings, dialect poems and music that celebrate a distinctly Cumbrian Christmas. In the company of Alan Cleaver, Lesley Park, Sue Allan and – on harp and guitar – the Cumbrian Duo.

For Christmas - a suitably seasonal image of what is arguably England’s finest example of a glaciated valley - High Cup under a good covering of snow. A highlight of the #NorthPennines National Landscape in #Cumbria #landscapephotography

Paul you need to come up this way. Try Shap for a first port of call and trace the lost avenue.

#140: The owls of Grasmere, with Polly Atkin ...in which Dave takes a midwinter stroll with author Polly Atkin to discuss The Company of Owls, Polly's new book about her tawny owl neighbours in Grasmere.

Tawny owl perched on lichen encrusted winter branches. Posted in advance of this weekend's episode #140 with @pollyrowena.bsky.social

The Wren Crag pines.

We had a great time :-)

More Wansdyke filth.... Just look at it!

Great shot. Did you know that the fell-name Hallin referred to the fell's form replicating that of a firehouse 'hallin' where meat was dried and smoked above an open fire (before the advent of metal ranges).

Today's recording episode #139 talking about the work of Fix the Fells crossed the Aira Beck valley from High Cascades car park to the summit of Gowbarrow Fell. This 'contrived' rustic National Trust signpost guiding us betwix.

Strode onto Gowbarrow Fell today with Fix the Fells co-ordinator Isabel Berry and NT ranger Jonny Skinn recording episode #139. A fascinating and inspiring conversation, this will be going live probably tomorrow.

We'll be on Gowbarrow Fell tomorrow recording a pod on the magnificent and vital Fix the Fells project.

Always one of the finest views in the Lake District: the approach to Sharp Edge on Blencathra's eastern flank. Probably my favourite fell in the Lake District. Not visited much this year due to shooting other fells for a forthcoming book along with trips out to the Alps. Back here soon though!

Classic pitch.

Image of a lone figure looking to Bowfell from Crinkle Crags in spring of this year with the light struggling to break through the clouds. Had to sit and wait for someone to wander into the frame, which always means sitting in the cold for a good while. But here it felt like it paid off 🎉🥳🎉

Flight of the condor.

After the last war someone called St Joseph from Cambridge University was the pioneer of aerial photography. Your drones are transforming our appreciation and understanding of the historic landscapes of southern Britain. Bravo

Bitterly cold day upon the top of Great Asby Scar with the wind swept Juniper trees #Cumbria #WestmorlandDales

A frosty but sunny start to @kendalmountainfest.bsky.social 🙏❄️🏔️ Lovely interview with Kate Bradbury & Jamie Normington from @CumbriaWildlifeTrust ( hope to see them on here soon ) #wildlifegardening #climatechange #KateBradbury #CumbriaWildlifeTrust #KendalMountainFestival #books #gardening

@drannaburton.bsky.social Am doing a few drawings of trees shortly for a book called "Hadrian's Wall and its trees". Just up your street.
