Less than half of 1% of American World War II veterans are still alive and that feels like not an insignificant reason why a bunch of people are suddenly openly doing Nazi things while television cameras are pointed at them.

This is from George Washington's farewell speech to the nation in 1796.

No kings.

The clouds over D.C. were looking very pretty on my walk to the train last night and it made me wonder, do you think *they* ever look up at the sky in awe? Do they experience amazement at anything besides piles of money?

At least part of the problem in America is an abject inability to admit to having been wrong. I used to be a big Russell Brand fan. Then I learned a thing or three about him & now I'm not. In February 2020 I thought COVID was "just a flu." I changed my take when I got new info. It's not that hard!

While cancer researchers are getting fired, some social media specialist at the White House is getting paid to make the most pointlessly cruel shit I've ever seen in my life, and MAGA commenters are loving it. Maybe the most starkest example I've seen that the cruelty is indeed the point.

Everyone post a detail of your "luxury" house paid for with your federal job paycheck, lol

I spent years in the news. Now I'm a federal employee. I feel like I've been MAGA's "enemy" for 10 years. I'm just trying to make a living like everyone is. And it's pretty disheartening to see comments from people cheering on the loss of livelihoods here in D.C. When did folks get so hateful?

Something I was wondering: Would it be possible for states to set up a fund that people could pay their state AND federal taxes into? Then they could withhold the federal portion from the feds until Congress gets back to legally handling federal spending? NY & CA in particular would be a big blow.

"DOGE worker known as 'SlimJimCrow', 23, changes all nuclear codes to combinations of 420 and 69, mistakenly posts them on unprotected Google doc" Be honest, if that were the first push alert you saw on your phone in the morning it wouldn't be that surprising.

The federal government is almost certainly going to shut down on March 15. That's when the current continuing resolution ends. It also happens to be the Ides of March. For all of you looking to do something really impactful, idk, if the @generalstrikeus.bsky.social also started then... could be cool

Anyone in the D.C. area doing the Picket Tesla thing Saturday?

Saw something during a late night doom scroll that I can't shake. It was like, "If you live in a democracy & the people democratically vote for a dictatorship, well...." and I was like, "Oh. 🫠🙃"

I want to be hopeful that we can all band together and fight this but some of y'all haven't even canceled Amazon yet so I have my doubts.

Speaking my worst fears aloud to get them out of my brain so I can sleep: I stay in my home in the DC suburbs because 1) this area has always been home 2) I can't sell because the local economy is 💩 due to the federal workforce collapse & so I die from being too close to Washington during WWIII.

When we learned about checks & balances in school, I don't feel the point was driven home enough that the whole thing is predicated on people not being egomaniac liars whose souls are for sale. Like... the decency is pretty load-bearing as it turns out.

I see late 80s millenials complaining about the halftime show over on the other apps today, how embarrassing. I thought I had a few more years before I started seeing my peers do that.

Does anyone else feel like the Super Bowl, especially the halftime part, and especially especially the Serena Williams part, was us being allowed a glimpse into the good timeline as a treat? (The commercials, though? Bad.)

I hope the inboxes of John Curtis, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Todd Young are staying as full as those of my Maryland senators...

Yes, this, and I would like to add that soooo many more people than I thought are reprehensible, irredeemable cowards.

I see a lot of folks confused about how police work in D.C. Department of Homeland Security officers are guarding these federal buildings. Federal property is their jurisdiction, not the local city police force. Kristi Noem, a Trump loyalist, was sworn in as the DHS Secretary on Jan. 25.

The federal government is the largest employer in the U.S. Walmart is the second largest. Would you be concerned about the economic fallout from Walmart cutting its workforce in half? Because I would.

So, who's gonna arrest them? I have an idea: You could arrest them. Could we maybe... arrest them? I think the path forward is to arrest them. Is there anyone we could call who could just arrest them? Has anyone considered arresting them? Do you think it could be as simple as placing them under arre

Me in D.C. today making every 18-24 year old boy uncomfortable by looking them deep in the face to see if they're DOGE.

"Thank goodness!" I yelled as I left news for a federal job in 2021, not knowing I was exiting the frying pan and entering the fire. I'm tired.

All of this erasure is awful, but I especially don't get the "I" erasure. Even under the "logic" that deems being gay a choice & being trans a mind virus, intersex people observably exist. But maybe that makes them the most dangerous ones to their narrative because they're BORN defying the "binary."

I need to think about things that aren't the world falling apart so instead of complaining about that on here (this time) I'm gonna complain about how - at some point - Grey's Anatomy just stopped acting like Arizona has a fake leg. Just putting her in full-length shots with 2 obviously flesh feet.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a declassified World War II-era CIA guide to sabotaging fascism in the workplace has become one of the most popular free ebooks on the internet: www.404media.co/declassified...

On December 20, Congress passed a Continuing Resolution to extend federal spending & avert a government shutdown... through March 14. Based on the events of the past week, I'm worried that a shutdown will almost certainly occur at that time & that it won't look like past shutdowns.
