Think this is hyperbole? In 1971 my mother was 22-23 weeks along when she went into labor and began bleeding out. Judge ruled she wasn't "close enough to death" for an abortion, so she suffered 18 hours of agony. She survived, but was rendered infertile at age 32. She's why I'm pro choice.
