Big win for USA over the Matildas. We got goals & Good Vibes from our own LYNN BIYENDOLO, a first USWNT goal for Michelle Cooper & double Thompson trouble made for a GOOD NIGHT. Now only Japan stands between the US & an 8th SonnettBelieves, sorry, SheBelieves win 🌟🇺🇸 📸 @nwslsoccer.com

Yeah it’s always the people not targeted by these things who minimize their meaning. Don’t let them gaslight you.

There’s no shame in sounding like that, because those people were correct.

I’ve said it before but a lot of people who are very smug about their contempt for “liberals” actually have just mistaken “liberals” for “women.”

While we are cutting costs it’s pretty clear that all of the Republicans in Congress could be very inexpensively replaced

i think this is basically what has happened a big chunk of the american pundit class

@newsjennifer.bsky.social on the gripping and impactful DOGE reporting by local news outlets: "It would be both ironic and so very American if the rich and powerful oligarchs were finally stopped by the underfunded newsrooms and working-class reporters." jenniferschulze.substack.com/p/local-news...

Merz just said on German TV that the primary priority of his government will be to ensure that Europe can achieve full strategic independence from the United States in the defence against Russia. Merz was once a die hard Atlanicist. Now, after Trump he is a Gaullist. Extraordinary.

It’s notable that Trump cabinet secretaries and agency heads, for the most part, are acting more interested in preserving their own prerogatives against Musk’s illegal intrusions than Republican members of Congress are.

The guy who essentially just won the next chancellorship, Friedrich Merz, has been doing a press tour for the past week or so talking about how America under Trump can’t be trusted and promising to investigate Musk for meddling in the German election.

If you are clear-eyed, looking at America, and worried about democracy, the lesson is that half-measures and incrementalism are not going to cut it.

Most likely explanation is that the militia wing of the President's supporters, whom the President praised and pardoned for previous attacks on democracy, harassed citizens seeking to express dissent. This is the story of many authoritarian states - is it the American story now?

Sign of the day…

being obsessed with IQ is a good sign that you have nothing in your life to give you actual meaning. (also a good sign you have bell curve-esque beliefs about human equality)

I once wrote an episode of Adam Ruins Everything where he said that IQ is a bad measure of actual mental ability. It got some of the most wild, furious responses online. There are people who base their entire world view on a relatively meaningless number

We should listen to this warning.

I think local news is doing a helluva job covering the doge fallout. Reporters are connecting the dots from DC to main street, going beyond acronyms to explain what government agencies do & giving voice to concerns of regular people. My latest ⤵️ open.substack.com/pub/jennifer...

Americans must understand what the Reichstag Fire was. In 1933, the Nazis used arson at Germany's parliament as a pretext to seize dictatorial power. Americans must beware of something similar – real or invented – happening here. Seem farfetched? Not when Trump is dismantling democracy as we speak.

it's good to have dreams

It is almost impossible to explain the sheer insanity of Elon Musk apparently having the capability to email the entire federal government evidently without getting approval from anyone—and, apparently, against the wishes of most Cabinet departments.

BREAKING: A MAGA bomb threat issued at the Principles First Summit in DC. I apologize for the language in it.

Dear Elon: Yyyyyyit’sbeen: •1 week since you looked at me •Cocked your head to the side and said, "I'm angry" •5 days since you laughed at me •Saying, "Get that together, come back and see me" •3 days since the living room I realized it's all my fault, but couldn't tell you

Can't imagine where they got the idea, but earlier in the week, the White House comms director posted (and then reposted) this.

They have the votes to impeach and convict him So they are not helpless They are complicit

This isn’t drugs. This is him assuming other people don’t work because he doesn’t do that much work. Very common bad boss behavior. bsky.app/profile/rcma...

Everyone is shitting on some blogger I've never heard of, and I was happy to just ignore it because who cares, but this is genuinely entertaining. "Gengis Khan couldn't spell his own name" is my new typo defense.

I think it's useful to boil fascism down to "a cult of power." In the US we can see it in the irrational admiration for the ultra-rich like Musk or the Silicon Valley oligarchs, or in the unquestioned obedience a mob boss bully like Trump receives from Republican "leaders" and the base.

He is admitting that he doesn’t want lawyers to stop him from breaking the law. No one would stop him from issuing lawful orders, so this has to be about unlawful ones.

“The 5 bullets email was the administration’s declaration of psychological warfare: Petty on its face and lacking sufficient instructions, its one and only purpose was to scare the shit out of workers already living in peril.”

Be sure to scroll through this roundup of town halls. People are ticked off and getting loud about it.

All conversations ended in 2008. NATO membership for Ukraine was never on the table and the Russians knew it. In winter 2022, Putin repeatedly ignored attempts by the west to reassure him Ukr isn’t getting in. Mearsheimer’s name will live in infamy for eternity for coming up w this bs.

"Camps." The word you're looking for here is "camps." www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/u...

The casual rise of eugenics and breathless, credulous declarations of innate superiority of some people over others even among self-styled centrists is one of the creepiest and most alarming trends I’ve seen in a while.

At some point, Trump has to decide who is running our government. Musk - who according to the White House is just an advisor - or the actual appointed leaders of agencies, who in many cases are telling federal employees not to respond to DOGE/OPM emails.

hey siri: show me a 𝑔𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡𝑤𝑜 ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑠 #NEWNFO

it’s a uswnt matchday and that’s fun but the absolute banger potential of japan/colombia shouldn’t be ignored

I don't think people realise how hard Why Everything Stopped Working (2026, penguin random house, I'm writing a book) is going to go. It will make some people very upset, but it's necessary to tell you who made everything stop working and why. My editor is as radicalised as I am. She's incredible.

At least one federal workers union, NTEU, is advising members not to respond to the email. People at intelligence agencies have been told the same since NDAs cover a lot of their work and they actually can’t chat with Elon and his 19-year-old friends about what they’re up to

I'll just say I'm thrilled that an independent journalist has so many moles & is breaking so much of this news.

Wow…I had to double, triple check to make sure this tweet from Senator Smith was real. Rare to see a US Senator tweet like this. Not complaining, just surprising.

Consider how much of a problem you have being online and then ask yourself how often you’ve actually done this

#Emails2DOGE

That guy is Executive Director, Naval Sea Systems Command. He's basically the guy in charge of making sure the boats are good boats. And he has to send a frantic email out telling everybody to treat DOGE like a phishing attack.

I told OPM what I did last week
