In addition to the awful discriminatory nature of this new anti-LGBT law, it goes against Hungary's obligations under the EU AI Act by authorising the use of facial recognition tech in public spaces (explicitly to surveil and profile Pride attendees en masse) - under rules operational since Feb

Hungary's latest attacks on LGBT rights demand a response from the @ec.europa.eu that upholds fundamental rights fro all, @hrw.org says www.hrw.org/news/2025/03...

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is historic. It’s a reminder for governments that they have an obligation under international human rights law to end systemic racism & address ongoing impacts of linked historic legacies. #Reparations www.hrw.org/news/2025/03...

Hungary's new anti-LGBT law bans Pride & penalizes public support for LGBT rights. It weaponizes facial recognition to target activists & suppress free expression. This is an alarming escalation of repression that demands urgent action from @ec.europa.eu. www.hrw.org/news/2025/03...

In his first major move as Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney eliminated roughly a third of all cabinet positions, including the crucially important Minister of Women and Gender Equality. This decision marks a major setback for women’s rights in Canada.

The detention of Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu along with over 100 other municipal officials and politicians is a politically motivated move to stifle lawful political activities in Türkiye. İmamoğlu and others detained should be released immediately. www.hrw.org/news/2025/03...

Hungary is once again scapegoating LGBT people. This is opportunistic and dangerous and unacceptable in the EU. The rights to assembly and expression are fundamental for any true democracy.

In yet another crackdown on LGBT rights, Hungary’s parliament has passed a law that will outlaw LGBT Pride and similar events. The law, which penalizes organizers and attendees, also authorizes the use of facial recognition technology to identify attendees.

In the @thenewarab.bsky.social I set out why UK PM Starmer's slashing UK aid is morally bankrupt & incredibly short sighted. It will cost lives, perpetuate instability, & undermine the UK's soft power and role on the global stage. It is a gift to authoritarians. www.newarab.com/opinion/keir...

A momentous week for international justice: the arrest of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and his transfer to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. Justice sometimes takes time, but I believe is ultimately unavoidable.

[email protected]: Marcos should now take further steps to address continuing human rights violations in the Philippines, including more recent killings and attacks against activists and civil society groups. The Philippine govt should also rejoin the ICC. www.hrw.org/news/2025/03...

Wah K'Ler Paw was just 30 when she died in a #Thailand refugee camp. Her death was preventable, but the #Trump administration's freeze on foreign aid abruptly cut her lifeline: kidney dialysis. My opinion in the Bangkok Post: www.bangkokpost.com/opinion/opin...

In a significant step toward affirming the rights of transgender people in Poland 🇵🇱, the country’s Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling eliminating the requirement for trans people to sue their parents in gender recognition proceedings. New commentary from @hrw.org: hrw.org/news/2025/03...

As we mark #CommonwealthDay2025, the Human Dignity Trust is making an urgent call to leaders of the 29 Commonwealth countries that maintain discriminatory anti-LGBT criminal laws to end the criminalisation of consensual same-sex intimacy. www.humandignitytrust.org/news/end-cri...

The CNMP, the nat'l body overseeing the work of Brazil’s prosecutors, issued a crucial recommendation highlighting the key role of human rights education & sexuality education in promoting safer schools. My commentary w/Prof. Denise Carreira of @uspoficial.bsky.social: www.hrw.org/news/2025/03...

With talk in Europe now of rearmament and the need for new security structures, it's vital European leaders and institutions keep human rights at the centre of their efforts. Democracy depends on it. My new piece for @hrw.org www.hrw.org/news/2025/03...

From the UN on Haiti: "[Criminal groups] kill, rape, terrorize, set fire to homes, orphanages, schools, hospitals, places of worship, recruit children & infiltrate all spheres of society. All this, with the utmost impunity & sometimes, as many sources point out, w/the complicity of powerful actors."

BREAKING: Supreme Court DENIES President Trump‘s emergency bid to cancel nearly $2 billion in USAID spending. The vote is 5-4.

Trump's irresponsible orders on foreign aid are also impacting children in need. In Haiti, services that benefited from U.S. funding, such as malnutrition screening for babies, will be cut, UNICEF said. buff.ly/Dc6NhJN

Great to learn that Dr. Arif Bulkan will be the new rapporteur for LGBTI people at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. We look forward to working with him in his new capacity. buff.ly/7IFJhLz

Children and future generations of Kabwe, Zambia are in dire danger from the toxic legacy of a former mine. Today, new mining in lead waste is making things worse. Comprehensive remediation is the only solution for a #leadfreekabwe New @hrw.org report out today: www.hrw.org/news/2025/03...

While the US backslides on non-discrimination, it's great to see places like Mexico City move forward to uphold gender diversity. The city's congress has moved to recognize non-binary identities to "promote inclusion." Well done.

The Trump administration has pulled out of the LGBTI Core Group, which has for years promoted equality and non-discrimination at the United Nations. buff.ly/KbWnATo Rather than bolstering int'l protections, the administration seems intent on dragging vulnerable populations back into silence.

UN Human Rights head spotlights the threats to human rights in contexts like Sudan and Ukraine. Notably, he also highlights that "LGBTIQ+ people, particularly transgender people, continue to face high levels of violence, harassment, and discrimination, in all regions of the world." buff.ly/yQDZqUv

February 19 marks 5 years since the racist attack in Hanau, Germany. February 19 also marks 5 years of political failure to increase protection of racialized communities. All the while Germany registers unprecedented numbers of right-wing extremist crimes. In 2024, a total of 41,406. 👇🏽 1/3

In which the Trump admin imperils the lives of the world's bravest activists who document torture & crimes against humanity, protect ethnic & religious minorities, stand for queer rights and gender equality in dangerous places, and thought the US had their backs: www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Trump's freeze of foreign aid stymies human rights work around the world. @outrightintl.bsky.social's new report highlights the impact on the work of LGBT+ rights orgs. buff.ly/4gHnCnn The findings are alarming. The freeze is impacting HIV prevention, housing, mental health services, etc.

NEW today from me & @hrw.org: Vehicle pursuits by TX troopers and local law enforcement have killed at least 106 people and injured 301 in counties participating in Texas’ Operation Lone Star. Reckless and high speed pursuits often occur in sensitive areas, in neighborhoods, & near schools.

📣 NEW from @HRW: Car chases by TX troopers and local sheriffs/police killed at least 106 people (incl. bystanders and children) + injured 301 in Texas’ dangerous Operation Lone Star. Trump policies to increase this type of enforcement will entrench the chaos and harm. www.hrw.org/news/2025/02...

The strong global response to Trump's sanctions against the #ICC has been encouraging, but more needs to be done. Words need to be backed by action, including through measures to ensure that the court can continue its vital work for justice (👉 EU Blocking Statute) www.hrw.org/news/2025/02...

As #Japan prepares to accept medical evacuees from #Gaza, it should urge the #Israeli gov't to lift the unlawful blockade, ensure the free flow of humanitarian aid, and fully restore basic services like electricity and water. shorturl.at/C1Fe8

Unsurprisingly, authoritarian-inclined leaders around the world celebrated the shuttering of USAID. Putin, Maduro, Lukashenko, Bukele, Orban, Ortega. https://buff.ly/3WRUhzD Lack of aid will leave ppl in need, limit scrutiny by independent groups, & stifle diversity/pluralism.

The Lancet on Trump policies impacting the right to health: "The immediate result has been confusion, disruption, and disorientation, but the response cannot be dictated by fear or resignation. There is a need for focus, strategy, and—indeed—hope. " https://buff.ly/413yeZ3

📢 NEW: The US government permitted Nevada’s Thacker Pass lithium mine without prior consent from even a single Tribe impacted, violating indigenous peoples’ human rights. Our HRW + ACLU report says, out today. 🧵 1/4

⚠️US sanctions on the ICC effectively puts the US on the side of war criminals at the expense of victims of grave crimes seeking justice. ICC countries should publicly & forcefully support the court for doing the job it was set up to do: ensuring no one is above the law. www.hrw.org/news/2025/02...
