I posted a shell script that was more complicated than it needed to be. The complex part was related to a bug in compiz-fusion, which I haven't run for 15 years. So, the simpler version. There was more stuff that figured out whether KDE or GNOME was running, but I only use KDE now.

For years, you've been able to grab a firefox tab and drag it outside of the firefox main window to make the tab its own separate window. There is no way AFAICT to put that tab back where it used to be. Promoting something to a full window is apparently easy, does demoting a window to a tab
