There was a whole lot of world building in this film & it's foundational to so much that came after
I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either. You could polish a hell of a lot, improve the acting a lot, improve characters a hell of a lot. But what we have is a lot more than I gave it credit for.

This film leaves us with a lot. Droids and droid armies we'd see time and time again in the decades to come. Ships and 70s looking crew like the original Star Wars but shinier. Planets and governments. New species from annoying to fun.

The politics part of the plot was perhaps overly complicated and stuffy but it served the basic structure. We get to see how the Republic operated, the senate, senators, diplomats, Jedi Knights and what they do and where they go and why. The machinery of an ancient and vast state.

Who could possibly forget the sandpaper to the brain that is Jar Jar Binks
But the set pieces are writ large. We get to see pre-empire Coruscant in detail for the very first time. And big ships. And shiny ships. And really classic looking ships for a time of the Republic that would never come again

I hated this a lot less than I was expecting. Recent incoherent sequels have definitely taken their toll. My biggest complaints with it really are wooden acting and thin characterisation. But there are characters. And they do matter. Who could possibly imagine Darth Vader as a small blonde boy.
