What a great surprise to see my work featured in the @ascbiology.bsky.social newsletter this month! I am beaming seeing that this work is meaningful to biology educators! www.lifescied.org/doi/10.1187/...

Sometimes I wonder why students so often seem to think about Y chromosomes as being Y-shaped. Then I see things like this figure published in Science Advances! Check out that Y-shaped Y chromosome in Figure 1! Yikes! @science.org www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

How are students picturing DNA in their heads? We asked students to draw DNA and their sketches revealed some surprising interpretations of familiar shapes and symbols. See some interesting sketches of DNA and read about tips for teaching with visual models in our preprint! 🧬

The world is chaos, but it’s important to still find things to smile about. Today I’m smiling because some folks were reinstated to the NSF and because John Waters showed up to the Oscars wearing boots with the fur (with the fur), got the whole club lookin’ at [him].

Biology educators and #DBER researchers — There's less than 1 week left to submit your abstract for SABER East! Share your teaching innovations and biology education research in a talk, poster, workshop, or a Shark Tank! saberbio.wildapricot.org/SABER-East

David Lynch was an influential guy, but I don't think even he would have imagined that his influence would extend to biology education research. I took inspiration from the citizens of a certain two-mountained town when I assigned pseudonyms for this study 🗻🗻☕🦉🥧 www.lifescied.org/doi/10.1187/...

✨Check out our publication in CBE—LSE ✨ We often draw chromosomes with an X-shape, but what do students think those crossed lines mean? Read about the surprising ways students think about chromosomes in our new research. www.lifescied.org/doi/10.1187/...

And you may ask yourself, "Well, how did I get here?"

Turnip & turnip

💜 Celebrate this Valentine's Day with education theory 💜

I had to pause Wallace and Gromit for a Turnip and turnip photo!

I'm thrilled to be moving to Baltimore this summer to continue biology education research at Towson University! To celebrate, I've put together my favorite pairings of the fabulous Baltimore icon John Waters and covers of CBE—Life Sciences Education.

A bit of New Jersey history in my hands—the final print copy of The Star-Ledger. Whether you’re from NJ and got the paper delivered or you just remember Tony Soprano picking up The Star-Ledger at the end his driveway, this newspaper has been a big part of what makes NJ special.

I’ve been turning to The West Wing as a source of solace during the government upheaval of science funding this week. Defunding science hurts society. To borrow from the series: science is science to everybody, and science is science to everyone.

What interesting things have you been doing in your biology classes lately? Tell us about them at SABER East! SABER East is a regional conference for biology educators and biology education researchers. Submit an abstract and join us for SABER East at @ritscience.bsky.social this May!

I am excited to announce the keynote speaker for SABER East is Autumm Caines, who will be talking about Open Education in the Age of AI. Abstracts open on Monday (January 27 through March 3rd) with 4 types of abstracts: short talks, posters, workshops and shark tank!

A color-coordinated outfit that matched both my SABER West conference poster and the Laguna Beach sunset!

Being on West Coast time but waking up at my normal East Coast time means that I have the chance to read The Sun Also Rises while the sun also rises.

When you’re in California for #SABERWest, you’ve got to find time to befriend the local rodents!

Turnip is a member of the Hot Sauce Committee

Hey all! Please share this opportunity far and wide! We are recruiting post bac students for our RaMP program. More details online - and bonus! I'm recruiting a student in Biology Education Research! www.ndsu.edu/researchgrou... Great things happening @ndsu-biosci.bsky.social

Are you a biology educator? Check out our new paper, Charting a new vision: Lessons on Vision & Change from a network of biology educators! We describe the conversations we've had as members of the Promoting Active Learning and Mentoring (PALM) Network 1/5 journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

Asking students to draw chromosomes can reveal a lot about how they understand chromosome structure and function. Join me at #SABERWest to look at how sketches show us the ways that chromosomes can be confusing! My talk is Sunday 1/19 at 11:00 in Room ALP 1600 @sabercommunity.bsky.social

Some nice ice.

Some really good cats over there, man.

We've got a new pre-print up! Visual models are important in molecular biology, but we found that they aren't used on biology exams very often! While models have the capacity to engage students in higher-order thinking, most questions with models only test factual recall.

I hope your 2025 is filled with many good opportunities to change into to something else! (Little Turnip here will be using the new year to change into a full-grown cat!)

The paperwork is signed, sealed, and delivered! Starting this August, I will be an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Towson University!

Hello, Bluesky! 🌟 We're thrilled to join this community and share the latest in #BER and #DBER research, events, and more. Let’s connect!

I'm thrilled to be talking with the University of Washington Biology Learning & Teaching Community today! We'll be chatting about drawings of DNA — You can probably spot what's a bit wonky about these drawings of DNA, but can your students? sites.google.com/uw.edu/uw-bl...

Check, ch-check, check, check, ch-check it out! My top music for 2024 should surprise absolutely nobody who has interacted with me this year 😂

Save the date for SABER East! The SABER East conference will be May 28-30, 2025. Join a vibrant community of biology educators in Rochester, NY for workshops, talks, posters, and networking. Abstract submission opens January 20. saberbio.wildapricot.org/SABER-East
