CUPE Atlantic Political Education Webinar on the American Tariff War with Canada, March 19th at 6:30pm (in Nova Scotia) novascotia.cupe.ca/2025/03/11/c...

“The idea that sweeping away provincial, territorial and federal regulations will improve the welfare of Canadians is also mistaken. Many government policies make sense because they address important economic, social or cultural priorities of Canadians.”

“The solidarity of the diverse coalition in the streets on Wednesday was a great reminder that people have much more power than we often remember—something we must not forget in the many fights to come.” @joannehusseyns.bsky.social #nspoli springmag.ca/nova-scotian...

Thank you, @cupe3912.bsky.social for your endorsement. The universities rely heavily these members to provide critical teaching & research support, with zero job security & unfair wages that certainly do not match the education & experience for these positions. #canlab cupe3912.ca/2025/03/06/c...

Beijing plus 30?! Oof that hits. I really have been fighting for these issues a long time.

Imagine a world free of discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Here’s to continued collective action for systems and structure changes. Happy International Women’s Day. #IWD2025

Enraging and heartbreaking to see this hate toward VE as well as Glitter Bean. Both are welcoming, inclusive and safe spaces for so many.

"[The Free Trade and Mobility within Canada Act] is really saying #NovaScotia is...open to the lowest bidder... lowering the protections...for the environment, for safety...for local jobs + local workers.” @csaulnier.bsky.social @ccpanovascotia.bsky.social a www.halifaxexaminer.ca/dismantling-...

Friends, I am super excited to announce that I have decided to run for President of CUPE Nova Scotia. I have spent my life fighting for economic and social justice. After 17 years at CCPA-NS I deeply understand the issues. Given everything that is happening, unions are more important than ever.

The remake of this clip is perfect. This is so Jeff Douglas. Thank you, JD. youtube.com/watch?v=_Ozb...

“Jeff Bezos’s monopoly on books means the city needs to spend more money every year on maintaining its collection, which is an additional $290,800 this year.” #Halifax public libraries should stop paying close to $700,000 annually to Amazon.

Bill C-36 seeks to simplify the movement of goods & services between provinces, but it leaves NS vulnerable to deregulation, weak protections, & lowered labour standards. Join us at the “Special Interests” for Democracy rally Wed., Mar. 5th at 12pm to hear @csaulnier.bsky.social discuss. #NSpoli

Encourage all to listen to @CAUT_ACPPU President @PeterSMcInnis discussing the implications of Bill 12: www.cbc.ca/listen/live-... Those interested in voicing their opinion on Bill 12, can register with the Law Amendments Committee by calling 902-424-8941.

Resist the culture of uncare.

I am thinking about these custodial workers today who have lost their jobs. Their union has now filed with the Supreme Court of NS asking for a judicial review of the contract awarded to a company that is supposed to be paying a living wage and is not.

Good news update on these essential school support workers from @cupens.bsky.social is that they have reached a tentative agreement.

DEI backlash. Media need to stop using this acronym. Spell it out. You know, instead of standing for diversity, equity and inclusion, these governments or companies are embracing segregation, inequity and exclusion. Back to blatant discrimination, dismantling supports that level the playing field.

Showing their true colour.

NS gov, bold or rash? The result of attempts to remove interprovincial trade barriers… “all provinces could be forced to accept the least stringent regulations for safety, environmental protection, and consumer protection.” www.policyalternatives.ca/news-researc...

Come work with us. #NovaScotia #Halisky

Hey #Halisky, during March Break, admission is free to the Cdn Museum of Immigration, and there's free public programming aligned with our upcoming temp exhibition on food & migration. Info: pier21.ca/march-break-...

This is a good idea. Elections Ontario says opinion polling likely contributed to the record-low turnout in 2022. The chief electoral officer urged a change to the law so that no political polling results could be published during the final two weeks of future campaigns. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Good news for Manitobans. Four years of funding for universal coverage to a range of contraceptives, diabetes, and hormone replacement therapy. Why has the NS government not signed?? #nspoli #medicare #pharmacare www.canada.ca/en/health-ca...

It troubling to see the NS gov pit democracy against being more effective and efficient. Legislation can be strengthened by allowing people to provide input, avoiding unintended consequences. People disengage when they lack meaningful opportunities to do so. #nspoli www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Excellent bold ideas that break from a failing model and actually build a stronger, more independent Canada. Thus is what we need. www.policyalternatives.ca/news-researc...

No Atlantic Premier has signed #pharmcare deal with the federal government for free diabetes medication and contraceptives. Letter by Dr Catherine Cervin urging governments to sign on. @cdndrsformedicare.bsky.social saltwire.pressreader.com/article/2816...

Allowing departments to refuse access requests on the basis they're « trivial, frivolous or vexatious » Constantly putting onus on us to ask and now appeal if refused, on very subjective grounds. Anybody making a request has questions that all of us should have had answers to already. #nspoli

We are desperately in need of strong consumer advocates. A funded agency with teeth? Of course none of them want to be regulated in any way. Company A complaining about the requirement that TV providers have to offer a $25 basic cable package.

Nova Scotia has proposed legislation increasing political interference in universities. Political interference in education isn’t just an American phenomenon. It’s alive and well in Canada too. Politicians should not dictate the priorities of universities.

“An overly broad mutual recognition agreement between provinces would be a classic recipe for a race to the bottom on standards. Low standards or weaker health and safety protections in any province, however inadequate, would have to be recognized across the country.”

One of the best parts of my job is learning from people like Lars Osberg. When he says things like, well one way to get rid of these interprovincial barriers is to no longer have provinces. And then you have to stop and think about the purpose of prov regulations and subsidies in local industries.

#Halifax Gov: "Social media is constantly evolving, and the municipality is looking to better understand where residents are most active. Complete a short survey to help ensure we're sharing municipal info in the most effective way." Survey closes Mar. 10 at 11:59 pm: LINK - halifax.ca/surveys

Good to see them roll back the changes to the auditor general. It does leave other changes. For more info see the coverage on “dismantling democracy” now out behind paywall by the team @halifaxexaminer.ca Like this one on foipop changes www.halifaxexaminer.ca/commentary/p...

Tmrw Feb 25 at 6pm. Halifax City Hall.

Remember these workers and their hard fought wins? They are about to lose their jobs. HRM has awarded this contract to the lowest bidder which has not offered any of these workers jobs. All contractors must pay a living wage. Where did they cut costs pensions, benefits, the winter coat allowance?

“Do we want that kind of government unilaterally deciding what our students are allowed to learn in our post-secondary institutions?” #cdnpse #nspoli

I am joining to take calls on CBC’s Maritime Call-in radio show -before that other one, today (Feb 23). Discussing cost of living.

There were many concerning NS Gov decisions this week. High on the list: The decision to use a P3 for the largest ever health care infrastructure investment. $7.5 billion locked in for 30 years. What of the $1 billion P3 schools buyback? Lessons ignored. #nspoli www.thecoast.ca/news-opinion...

«It’s like you want something..but you cannot get it. » How real increase in median wages masks disproportionate impact on low wage workers. NS has lowest median- 50% earning less than $25.64 (living wage avg is $26.53). #nspoli @alamreports.bsky.social www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

The NS 2025-26 Budget claims unlock our potential, but it doesn't adequately invest in the social infrastructure that would improve the lives of everyday Nova Scotians. Tune into the Todd Veinotte Show at 10:45 to hear @csaulnier.bsky.social discuss: halifax.citynews.ca/audio/the-to... #NSpoli
