✌️ Victory! @spotlightcorruption.org is delighted to see our campaign to give law enforcement agencies greater protection from legal costs when pursuing the assets of deep-pocketed crooks has been successful. The measure has been included in the new Crime Bill announced in Parliament this week 👇.

🧵 1/10 This week saw the Procurement Act 2023 come into force www.gov.uk/government/c.... A while back,I served on the Cabinet Office's Procurement Transformation Advisory Panel, giving input on transparency and anti-corruption provisions for this post-Brexit procurement legislation. Is it any good?

Stories of botched procurement contracts have been all too familiar in recent years. But the new rules could be a win-win for both suppliers and government www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/proc...

⚖️ This is the first time a British politician has been charged under the UK Bribery Act. ⚖️ We're monitoring this case closely. Regardless of the outcome, it could provide valuable insights into foreign interference within our political system. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

👍 Great to see the new #debarment regime go live yesterday. If used effectively, this will help prevent fraud & corruption in public contracts. The public can now make submissions for companies to go on the list. But we need 3️⃣ key things to make the new regime effective:

short 🧵- this is one for the corruption nerds: as @privateeyenews.bsky.social have long pointed out, the Teesside freeport project overseen by newly-ennobled mayor Ben Houchen is riven with corruption risk and requires a proper investigation

When one in ten peers are paid for political advice while legislating, it raises questions on whose behalf they're legislating. These revelations show why reform must include tougher lobbying rules and improved standards in the House of Lords. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Neat analysis by @transparencyuk.bsky.social's Rose Whiffen on the advances and self-defeating shortcomings of the UK's new register on ministerial gifts and hospitality

Plus ca change...I well remember this line when at @transparencyuk.bsky.social from corrupt govts around the world - don't address the root cause of why perceptions of your country are bad, try instead to shoot the messenger and those who have highlighted corruption and are campaigning for change.

🔴 The CPI measures public sector corruption but does not account for financial secrecy or money laundering. No country is entirely free from corruption, and even those with high rankings still face it in various forms. Check out our analysis. #CPI2024

The global average in the #CPI2024 remains at 43 out of 100 points, with over 2/3 of countries scoring below 50. Billions of people live in countries where corruption destroys lives and undermines human rights. Here's the analysis ➡️ anticorru.pt/39d The results ⬇️

Seismic White House announcement on FCPA. Poses a big dilemma for UK and other signatories of OECD Anti-Bribery Convention. Should all countries now stop prosecuting their companies for paying overseas bribes? Will selective prosecutions become part of trade/tariff wars? www.ft.com/content/f880...

The BVI proposals for "open" registers of corporate ownership. - You can only request info if you're party to regulatory or criminal proceedings. - They tip off the owner of the company. - You have to know the owner of the company you're trying to find out the owner of. Classic Catch-22.

🗣️ "If overseas territories refuse to implement meaningful corporate transparency reforms, we must use our powers to ensure they do." An important piece by @joepowell.bsky.social on the need for full public registers in Britain's overseas territories. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

More details here www.transparency.org.uk/news/smokesc... from @margotmollat.bsky.social on why the BVI's proposals are so bad

The BVI's proposals are a joke. The UK Government now needs to get tough. Real tough. Not only is the ownership register not open to the public. The people granted access is ridiculously narrow, and includes a trip wire to alert those being investigated! www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

The British Virgin Islands' new company register proposal is just more of the same—protecting secrecy over transparency. Illicit finance thrives in the shadows. Read my full take on how their proposal falls short: www.transparency.org.uk/news/smokesc...

The BVI's proposed company ownership register would make it virtually impossible to identify those behind offshore companies. This undermines global efforts to combat financial crime and poses a serious setback for corporate transparency. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...
