It's hard to find good news to celebrate these days but Richard Glossip won big at the Supreme Court this week and @jordansmith.bsky.social and I broke our sabbaticals to write about it. After nearly a decade covering this saga, it truly feels like there is an end in sight. At @theintercept.com:

Next month Louisiana planned to execute Chris Sepulvado who had been on death row for decades. He was an 81 year old, frail, terminally ill man in a wheelchair. Last night he died a natural death.

Almost 10 years ago, I sued the Missouri Dept of Corrections for refusing to allow me to be a press witness for executions after I had done reporting that they were not big fans of. The courts sided with us and the state agreed to settle rather than continue trying to fight. Good luck to the AP

Here is the Associated Press complaint: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us... And here is the motion for a preliminary injunction: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Gift link. The actual story of the shackled people being deported without even being told where they were being taken — maybe to countries where they’d face torture or death — while their terrified children cried.😢 The White House posted that pic with “ASMR” tag. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/w...

I understand why these stories exist but it’s important to be clear that he’s not “saving” 16 billion, he’s choosing, personally, without oversight, to wipe out 16 billion dollars of government services to veterans and the disabled and food safety etc etc

NEW: Here is Trump's executive order purporting to end the independence of multi-member head independent agencies. www.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

Here’s last night’s story about the beginning of Donald Trump’s second term as well as some very upsetting statements about omelettes. You’ll see. youtu.be/cw0F8G4-dMw

This!

Paramount execs are worried that if they settle Trump’s CBS lawsuit and then his administration approves their merger, they might be accused of bribery. www.wsj.com/business/med...

"Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can even do much to help it. While it lies there it needs no constitution, no law, no court to save it."

The FCC has opened an investigation into a radio station's news coverage of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. www.kqed.org/news/1202597...

Not saying no one does it anymore, but the open source instinct in news has really diminished, and it's frustrating.

NEW: The Trump admin told a US-funded aid group that gives food & medicine to starving children in Sudan to shut down. Children would die. They’re defying the order. But the aid world is in chaos. Brett Murphy & Anna Barry-Jester: www.propublica.org/article/trum...

If CBS ownership pays this bribe, the only honorable course for those responsible for CBS News— News leadership, EP and correspondent at 60 Minutes and standards execs— would be to resign. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/30/b...

Jfc do not trade the fucking First Amendment for a goddamn merger www.nytimes.com/2025/01/30/b...

Maria Moe had been held in a low-security women's facility with no disturbance, complaints, or disciplinary record. Trump has held her in solitary confinement for the past four days and plans to send Moe, who transitioned at 15, to a men's prison where she risks facing abuse, assault, and rape.

This was a wild one. A federal judge had ordered the Human Rights Defense Center not to publish the names of U.S. Park Police officers and claimants that the USPP had inadvertently released to it.

BREAKING, via The Seattle Times: Trump's executive order to restrict birthright citizenship is blocked for at least the next two weeks by a Reagan appointee in Seattle who eviscerated the Trump lawyers present defending the order. www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

"The Bishop hijacked the Prayer Service" is like saying "the pilot hijacked the plane"

🎯: “No ‘process of national reconciliation’ can begin when poor losers, whose preferred candidate loses an election, are glorified for disrupting a constitutionally mandated proceeding … and doing so with impunity.”

Like one of the callers, I deal with raynaud's, so I loved this segment on how to keep warm on days like today. www.wnyc.org/story/lesson...

It’s going to take months to sort through all of the stunning, crazy things Trump’s first batch of Executive Orders is attempting to do. But this little nugget from the pro-death penalty EP is … quite a thing unto itself: www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Holy cow. Executives at CBS’s parent company have discussed settling Trump’s lawsuit against CBS News/60 Minutes, because they need the Trump administration to sign off on a planned corporate merger. www.wsj.com/business/med...

“[T]he review was concluded — on Wednesday, according to Garland’s letter and a report provided to Law Dork via @csmcdaniel.bsky.social, who received it on Wednesday night from the Justice Department [when he was at a Super Smash Bros. tournament, which he won and received a mini Goomba lamp]”

EXCLUSIVE: A.G. Merrick Garland withdraws federal execution drug protocol following review. "[T]here is significant uncertainty about whether the use of pentobarbital as a single-drug lethal injection for execution treats individuals humanely," Garland wrote. New, at Law Dork —>

People in the top half of the piece: The audience should NOT be laughing at Serious Cinema Directors in the bottom half of the piece: Yeah it's a mix of comedy and drama and I think it's funny www.nytimes.com/2025/01/14/s...

New from @sylviaruthg.bsky.social, who broke the original story: LMPD chief acknowledges "error" in citing homeless woman in labor, but says officer's belief that she was faking was "sound reasoning."

I got a call today from Reiyn Keohane, a fierce defender of incarcerated trans people in Florida. She's been the lead plaintiff in 3 cases against the Florida prison system for denying her and others gender affirming care. www.themarshallproject.org/2024/04/26/t...

@matthewschafer.bsky.social not vital at all, but I've been reading the Power Broker, & this passage about public records had me curious about the state of open records laws back in the 1930s. I know NY's (and the Feds') laws came about in 60s/after. Know anything written about open records pre-60s?

This is the stuff I'm a doomer about. Real journalism takes time - even a quick, original 700-word story requires a lot of legwork, relationships, etc. It can never compete with instant slop, or accounts that just plagiarize news for free with more sensationalistic (and wrong) framing.

This is my New Year's Eve.

An Alabama town refused to allow Prattville Pride to have a float in the Christmas parade until a federal judge issued a TRO. I FOIA'd the city for their emails about it and the response is "we would prefer not to."

"Morehead’s conduct first came under scrutiny during the exoneration of Lamonte McIntyre, a KCK man who was 17 when he was convicted of a double homicide in 1994... She was accused of threatening to take an eyewitness's children if she failed to falsely accuse McIntyre of the killings."

We're still covering the KCK law enforcement story and today, I wrote about how the prosecutor who helped Roger Golubski set up at least one innocent man and left a controversial legacy at the US Attorney's office in Kansas: www.kcur.org/news/2024-12...

The rich are not like us, and today's super rich are going to make us look back fondly on the era of the robber barons. From Susan Glasser in the New Yorker: www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

public media funding is always under threat — but now Elon Musk is targeting NPR and PBS for budget cuts. @benmullin.bsky.social and I found out how stations are preparing: www.nytimes.com/2024/12/27/b...

BREAKING: PRESIDENT BIDEN COMMUTES MOST FEDERAL DEATH SENTENCES. With the actions, 37 of the 40 men on death row will now be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Excluded are Robert Bowers, Dylann Roof, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. More at Law Dork: www.lawdork.com/p/biden-clem...

The local newsroom at @lpm.org actually broke this story — specifically @sylviaruthg.bsky.social, an excellent reporter. Really bad form for @nytimes.com to swoop in and act like they found it out of nowhere. Here’s the original: www.lpm.org/news/2024-12... Support local journalism.
