Excellent article explaining the vast ways the National Weather Service protects life and property, and supports commerce in the U.S. The NWS is the gold standard across the world, with many countries modeling the NWS operating model. It’s a government service worth saving.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, says the National Science Foundation has given money to thousands of "Woke DEI" studies. Researchers say that's misrepresenting science and disparaging important research.

“Why do I need NOAA? I’ve got a weather app.” Is equivalent to asking “Why do I need farms? I can go to the supermarket.” www.noaa.gov/about-our-ag...

All NWS services: data, forecasts, radar, satellite, IT infrastructure, costs each American taxpayer $4/yr. Less than a latte. And each person gets back 73 x $4 = $292 a year in value for that service. I think that’s a pretty good deal.

Suggestion to Americans: If you used a current bank account with funds on a recent tax return, it may be wise to contact your bank and request a change. Account and routing numbers are accessible, and Elon Musk’s staff have access to this information. Stay safe and protect your assets.

Translation: We want to privatize everything.

Heads up for the Weather Community! You can now find NOAA (@noaa.gov), NOAA Climate (@climate.noaa.gov) & NWS HQ (@nws.noaa.gov; still being set up) on Bluesky!

What’s the difference between a gov controlling an algorithm, silently eliminating reach for things it doesn’t like, vs the same gov using its power, to demand that the platform remove the things it doesn’t like.? In China they are overt. With TikTok in the US, they control silently

"A request made through ChatGPT, an AI-based virtual assistant, consumes 10 times the electricity of a Google Search" This isn't a game. This is accelerated destruction via huge usage of power, water, resources etc. Stop using it - especially for messing about!! www.unep.org/news-and-sto...

I eagerly anticipate Hank’s video every season (and I can’t get the huge grin off my face after seeing my little cameo!) Another great video from Hank. youtu.be/FZcpLmOOsME?...

Not the best pic but it was a spectacular sunset in N Illinois today.

Scientists found community on Twitter and stayed because they feared the platform would be full of misinformation if they left. But Bluesky is now the center of online #medsky and science conversation. @katiepalmer.bsky.social has more on scientists' hopes, dreams, and fears for social media: 🩺🧪🧫

Decided to go with a Pokémon twist for this Halloween. Charizard returns!

This year began with my first January tornado, in Illinois no less. Thought it was the first of many but it turned out to be one of the only photogenic ones I saw in 2023. January 3, 2023 - Maroa, IL
