If wonders @ how Musk et al got any kind of legitimacy to do expressly political actions of the sort that the're doing, overriding the estab. constitutional order, do look at this book, for a partial (though overly-Teutonic professor) account. It is good. www.wiley.com/en-us/The+As...

“a fortunate position”: you mean he bribed Trump

He’s absolutely right, and it is extremely unlikely that the EU or the UK will actually do anything about all of this danieldrezner.substack.com/p/will-this-...?

I too worry about the AAUP not reading the situation rightly, reacting instead of responding, objectively being wrong about some things, and covering over its members’ uncertainties and ambivalences with strident rhetoric. www.chronicle.com/article/can-...?

"The oligarchs kissing the ring, the lawsuits against the media, the constraints on which media should be in the White House pool, and which are not — all that sounds familiar": How Trump's Washington feels like the early days of Putin's Moscow. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/26/u...

An attacker with a knife is apparently at large, either on UVA’s Grounds or adjacent to them. I’m old enough to remember when an event like this would shock the whole country. Now, it’s just Thursday.

Thank you so much, @arturoviaggia.bsky.social! A reminder that the book is Open Access, should anyone want to take a look (for free!) doi.org/10.1017/9781...

Donald Trump has fired more Veterans than any other President in our nation’s history.

my superpower for predicting things? paying attention to what people with power say and do

This is very bad. “A panel of scientific experts that advises the Food and Drug Administration on vaccine policy — and has been the target of criticism from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — learned on Wednesday that its upcoming meeting to discuss next year’s flu vaccines has been canceled.”

Once again, just like with Musk and Twitter, these fucking idiots don't understand what was already happening, rip it down, and then try to rebuild the same thing, but way dumber, because they can't understand nuance and complexity.

JFC. The US Economic Policy Uncertainty Index is at its highest level since 2000, higher than during the Financial Crisis, higher than during COVID

The GOP really wants us all to die

Billionaire Jeff Bezos, who owns the Post, says the newspaper's editorial section will publish columns only "in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets." By @davidfolkenflik.bsky.social

Former Wash Post top editor Cameron Barr severs ties to the company He writes that Bezos’ revamp marks an “unacceptable erosion of its commitment to publishing a healthy diversity of opinion and opinion” www.linkedin.com/posts/camero...

Baron is right, as he often is

Useful to follow Philip Bump!

This is really sobering and will be important to think about, if the United States survives the next four years www.brookings.edu/articles/the...?

Percent of births financed by medicaid, by state, 2023

To repeat: "A country so stupid it actively trashes one of things it's good at and famous for."

House Republicans just voted to gut Medicaid, which covers 1 in 5 Americans overall, including 41% of births and 63% of nursing home care. They also just voted to gut SNAP, on which 41 million food insecure Americans rely. This won’t just harm people. This will kill people. They own this.

This, by @lioneltrolling.bsky.social, is absolutely right. Bari Weiss publishes a piece defending the Nazi salute. www.unpopularfront.news/p/enough?

@dandrezner.bsky.social is right. The crucial strategic fact about our era is not Trump, but the current GOP, which is what enables him. Were they otherwise, things would be very different. danieldrezner.substack.com/p/the-truth-...?

Trump soils everyone who dallies with him. It's the oldest lesson in the book, but people keep re-learning it, then forgetting it again.

You really have no idea where this corporate press release will end up, I encourage you to read the whole thing www.prnewswire.com/news-release...

Ohio Dems please give us someone just barely acceptable to vote for this should be so easy

it seems like DC might now be a free fire zone for ALLEGED domestic violence, as long as you have an R after your name

Eric Feigl-Ding will surely be disappointed, but he'll go on to some other panic object & hope we forget this one

The corruption is legion, and spreading, and so flagrant as to need a new word for "flagrant"

The day after the day after begins. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/24/w...

Wow. Just--wow.

This is not the first time the NYT has called Trump's lies "lies," not by a long shot. (See the next post in this thread for an example from 2016.) But this @peterbakernyt.bsky.social story on his "distortions, conspiracy theories and outright lies" hits hard. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/23/u...
