This is a such a great thread. A lot of times people put me on lists of "actually good male role models" which always makes me a little uncomfortable because very little of what I do speaks to the insecurity and fear young men have and sometimes I feel pretty guilty about that.

I watched „Sinners“ yesterday and loved it, the way it weaves real and imagined horrors, the power and the painful roots of music and the way it centers questions of privilege, violence and negotiation. This piece made me appreciate it even more:

10 years of the Plastic Bags Directive. Taking centuries to degrade, they were among the top litter in the EU, often ingested by animals or breaking into microplastics & ending up in our food. By the end of 2025, our goal is 40 bags per person per year. Are you below this target?

My dirty secret is that I've been working on a popular science book about stress physiology (in my spare time) ever since my stress systems tried to kill me. It's still a ways out but I'm guessing people are getting sick right now, so here's a TL;DR version: www.skwinnicki.com/single-post/...

I can't emphasize enough that the most important thing journalists can do right now is publish exactly this kind of article

We first published this story in 2016. "As journalists who conduct original reporting—and do their best to be unbiased in that process—become fewer, our world becomes more politicized and embattled."

Watching the Day 2 opening keynote at #LingComm25 from famous Dutch science communicator @ionica.mathstodon.xyz.ap.brid.gy "You can always tell how much jargon you're allowed to use by how colourful and glossy the photos are in the publication"

Ionica Smeets points out that there's a lot that goes into communication! Where do you start? Answer: yes. #LingComm25

An interesting insight from Ionica Smeets: In Netherlands, one goal is to increase public trust in science. Another is increasing the trust scientists have in the public. Mutual trust. #LingComm25

A man of words made out of words. This printed carmen figuratum, in German Figurengedicht, shows Martin Luther as a figure made out of words. And the words form the three creeds used in the Lutheran tradition: the Nicene Creed, the Apostles' Creed and the Athanasian Creed. #earlymodern #bookhistory
