Writing a LoR for a student's med school application? DON'T repeat their resume, the application covers that already. DON'T focus on their intellectual curiosity. I'm not sure I've ever met a student who isn't curious. Instead, think about info you can provide that the student can't. 1/2

Hey does anyone want to postdoc with me? :)

Trans people exist, have always existed, and will loved and valued, no matter what their government tells them. (Also, I’m a part of the government, and I’m here to tell you I love you + I won’t stop fighting for you no matter what!)

Because I keep seeing questions about when it’s ok to block someone on here: If an account makes you ask that, they are dodgy and disrupting your experience on this app. Block. Life is too short to give a random account the benefit of the doubt at the expense of your mental health.

Forgot to add: U Wisconsin’s Gender & Women’s Studies Dept. is accepting applications for their Wittig Postdoc in Feminist Biology, due Feb. 14. It’s been a minute (omg nearly a decade 😱) since I was in this role, but if my experience can answer any questions, let me know.

The Wittig Postdoc in Feminist Biology was one the best experiences in my career. I developed my teaching & research skills, while deepening my understanding of feminist epistemology. And I witnessed what a functional & inclusive dept looks like (rare in academia). crgw.gws.wisc.edu/scholarships...

Duh!

tl;dr New JHE Editorial Board are in charge of all pending manuscripts.

Fascinating stuff with excellent graphics explaining the danger. Link: www.hhs.gov/surgeongener...

I can relate – my own adventures in brewing included some nearly undrinkable experimental brews! It made me appreciate that people figured out beer making at all without modern equipment.

I keep thinking about how many institutional failures symptomatic of our society led to this doctor being able to cause such harm. This @propublica.org piece is long, wild, sad, terrifying, and definitely worth reading! #MedicalEthics #MedEthics

Also essential for #MedEd #Anatomy slides!

In 2023, I had a bad day in the Wits hominin fossil vault. I mistakenly thought a fossil I wanted to study had gone missing. A deep dive into old #anatomy texts revealed a clue to the seemingly missing StW 431 pubic body. #paleoanthroplogy hdl.handle.net/10539/40427

Are any #BioAnthsky / #Anthrosky folks writing about how the changing landscapes of #anthropology training, funding, & career paths will affect #BioAnth theory & knowledge production in the future? My Google scholar search isn’t going well. #Paleoanth #BioAnthropology

1. The conventional explanation for food deserts—that these places are too poor or too rural to generate enough spending on groceries, or too Black to overcome racist corporate redlining — fail to grapple with a key fact: food deserts didn’t used to exist. My new piece in The Atlantic.

It’s late November, the political news is awful, the week is short due to a holiday, it’s cold out, and Outlook is having problems. Very tempted to go curl up with a book and move all my to do list items to next month.

If I may also suggest, our article in American Scientist earlier this year (if you can't get past the paywall DM me) by me, @anthrofuentes.bsky.social, @cvansickle.bsky.social, & Catherine Clune-Taylor, intended for a broader audience.

I need to remember this the next time my scans won’t align or a landmark won’t register. As much as troubleshooting tech can be annoying, at least I’m not collecting 3D data from physically suspended bones! #paleoanthropology

You mean thin adult men aren’t appropriate stand-ins for every other type of person?

Remember what they took from us.
