Trump is fixated on the US stock market, which is up since he took over. But the Chinese equity markets are up even more. E.g., "year-to-date as of Feb. 14, the MSCI China Index has risen 13.9%, dramatically outperforming the MSCI USA Index’s 4.4% gain." www.invesco.com/us/en/insigh...

Looking forward to this!

My read is that CBAM charges will apply for goods imported in 2026, but importers won't have to send the checks until 2027. So the policy isn't delayed, just the payments. www.spglobal.com/commodity-in...

Great REPORT on #EU #CarbonBorderAdjustment “I’ve been studying #ClimatePolicy for about 20 years, and this is the thing that has made me most optimistic.” - @cwolfram.bsky.social @mitsloansusty.bsky.social #ParisAgreement #CarbonPollution

Wise words from my wise co-author @kclausing.bsky.social: If a candidate announced a tax increase on the poor and middle class to fund a tax cut for the rich, voters would soundly reject that proposal. But tariffs wrap this fiscal switch in a veneer of nationalism. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/o...

More dominoes are falling: Taiwan is talking about implementing a CBAM later this year. The article also mentions that Taiwan imports a third of its cement from Vietnam, so maybe Vietnam will be next? www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/...

If you're interested in the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), see below. Sloan did a really nice job capturing the main issues for a non-technical audience. mitsloan.mit.edu/ideas-made-t...

A little confusing to know where the US is on sanctioning Russia but this sounds like good news. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Amid all the mixed messages on Russia sanctions, one thing is clear: Putin will demand substantial sanctions relief as the price for any deal just as restrictions begin to bite, with new oil restrictions only fully coming into effect at the end of February. www.politico.eu/article/marc...

I can't wait either!

I can't find a free version, but I think I get/love the idea: the Canadians should retaliate against Trump tariffs with a CBAM. Maybe Canada could work with other countries on this approach. www.theglobeandmail.com/business/com...

Out this morning from @eenews.bsky.social. The power of CBAM is real: encouraging other countries to adopt carbon pricing! www.eenews.net/articles/nat....

Brings to mind this map from Jing Li at Tufts. From 2015, but perhaps still relevant. Hint: Tesla is orange. jingli-econ.github.io/documents/pa...

Super sensible piece by @edwardfishman.bsky.social. He notes, "We have no doctrines for economic warfare, nor do we have treaties outlining rules and norms" but stops short of recommending those treaties, perhaps bc of Trump's aversion to working with other countries. www.wsj.com/economy/trad...

"If Washington is putting up a higher fence around its trade, other nations are lowering theirs." This could also be an opportunity for progress on climate, if other countries move towards agreements without the US. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/03/b...

We need to do a better job linking climate change to the things they do care about. E.g., climate change is massively impacting the economy - just ask people whose home insurance prices have quadrupled recently.

Fed source to me re: this news: “ten alarm fire”

Argh... though the lawyers quoted question whether the Trump Administration has the authority to do this. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/30/n...

Great write up of the immediate impacts of the Jan. 10 sanctions. In sum, global oil prices stable and a large increase in the share of Russia's shadow fleet subject to sanctions. Hopefully, this puts downward pressure on Russian revenues.

Linking the schemes “would also make it possible to avoid border frictions caused by the EU and UK imposing carbon border adjustment mechanisms (CBAMs), a tax on carbon-intensive imports such as steel, cement and fertiliser.”

The figure below from EIA blew me away. It suggests that growth in passenger miles from 2- & 3-wheelers (~motorbikes) will be >> than growth in passenger miles in light-duty vehicles (~cars). Question for #energysky: How much fuel is currently consumed globally by motorbikes versus cars?

What about also making the fossil fuel companies pay for the ongoing harm their products are causing? That's what a carbon price would help do.

Just came across this - wholly sensible. Both @parisastry.bsky.social and Ishita Sen are worth paying attention to!

Thanks to @michaeldbauer.bsky.social and everyone else at the SFFed for inviting me - always happy to talk CBAM!

Lots of interesting ideas in this: tiered carbon pricing to recognize differentiated responsibilities, pairing carbon pricing with climate finance and technology sharing, ideas on how to build to a multilateral approach. www.weforum.org/stories/2025...

A good overview overview of the 'likely first moves' the new Trump Administration on climate and energy, including: withdrawing from the Paris Agreement (again); lifting the moratorium on new LNG export permits; and ending new offshore wind power developments, & more! www.reuters.com/business/ene...

Come hear about carbon border adjustment mechanisms (CBAMs)! I predict/hope we'll all be talking about them more in 2025.

Yes, so true!
